Postby Pola » Sat Mar 27, 2010 1:11 pm

I'm getting a new baby Cinnamon/Pineapple male green cheeked conure!!!
unfortunatly i cannot visit him because i live too far away :( but i have been in contact with the breeder and he has been sending me development pictures every 5 days. i am really excited and i cannot wait.
I will be taking him home in 2 weeks (10th april) then he will be 8 weeks.

it will take me 4 hours to get from the breeder's house to mine do you have any ideas on how to take him home so he wont be scared or stressed?

here are some pictures:

Too cute!

I have heard about people sending the carrier ahead so the bird can get comfortable with it, to help in transit. I have no direct experience, though. And maybe have a favorite toy in there?

I don't think it's that big of a deal. You are going to stress over it more than the bird. 4 hours isn't that bad. Some people ship them across the country by air. All I can say is make well sure that the bird doesn't sit in a draft in the car. I wouldn't open the windows or run the AC. The bird is young and probably won't eat for a while so immunity won't be the best so the last thing you want to do is let it get cold. I'd keep the car around 75 and no blowing air. For a baby bird (especially small like this) I may actually recommend a cardboard box with holes sooner than a carrier for this kind of trip. Especially if its a wire carrier that is more open like a cage. This way it will be dark, the bird won't see anything, and probably be a bit warmer too. It's a baby so it won't be good at perching and will just sit on the bottom. Just remember to tell whoever is driving to drive steady and not slam the brakes. While everyone else has seat belts to hold them down, the bird will just hit the walls every time.

no idea about the travel but the box sounds better as its dark and more confined. what a cutie.

What a cutie!

Both of our birds were brought home in a box ... and so was the cockatiel that my step-daughter bought. Like the others have already said, that is probably your safest bet for bringing your little baby home.

How cute! I bet you're really excited :)

My baby Amazon was flown to me and then we had a three hour car ride home. He came in an enclosed small animal carrier with towels on the bottom of it, a wooden perch and some veggies/fruit. The breeder had already taken the time to get him comfortable with the carrier prior to him coming to me. He was 3 months old so he was able to perch just fine and he was really social. We seat belted the carrier into the back seat of the car and he was able to see me if he wanted to. He spent most of the trip on his perch though. The trip really didn't seem to affect him at all, babies seem to be quite adaptable.

I'm sure a box with some old towels on the bottom and some holes would be just fine if you don't have a carrier. If you're going to buy a carrier I'd recommend one that's hard plastic and not a wire one so he can feel safer.

Thanks a lot... now I've gotten bitten by the baby parrot bug! Thankfully we really can't have a second parrot right now, otherwise I'd be on a baby bird search ;) Really makes me want though. :amazon:
