Re: Any alternatives to "Happy huts"?

Postby marie83 » Wed Jan 20, 2016 3:34 pm

Not sure about alternatives but I've not had any problems with happy huts, mine don't chew them at all and there is nothing they can catch their claws on. Ollie is 6 now and had his since he came home.

Of course I cannot say they are safe... I've heard the horror stories too but I've had no reason for concern with my birds. On the other hand I don't let them have rope perches in their cages but I do in the living room where I can keep an eye on them.

everything has risks.

I use a happy hut for my greencheek. I plan to replace it, at come point, with a rolled up seagrass mat.

I've used them for single GCCs, quakers and sun conures and never had a problem but there are horror stories going around about them so I would recommend caution. By the way, the ones I've used are the ones made out of something like canvas and not the 'fluffy' kind.

I took my fluffy one out today, and replaced it with a rolled-up seagrass mat.

She had started to pull up the fleece on the inside of the happy hut. I figured it was time to make the change.

I made it a bit too big, but she took right to it. She slept in in last night with no problem.

Easier to clean, and cheaper, too.

She's sleeping on top of this one, rather than in it.

A paper lunch bag folded down so it will stay open makes a good emergency hut.

She's sleeping on top of this rolled up mat, instead of in it.

I didn't think that was a problem, but she wakes up talking at any little noise, now. I don't think she's sleeping as soundly. Before we never heard from her once she put herself to bed.
