Hello Everyone

Postby Blu » Sat Apr 30, 2016 3:59 pm

Hello everyone, its been awhile since I have posted here so I figured I would post an update. I hope you and your birds are all doing well :D. Blu and Connor have been great, as happy as can be. I plan to get Blu his girlfriend sometime soon as I recently started a job as a Life guard and swim instructor.
I had an incident with Connor this past Monday unfortunately, Connor chewed his blanket cover during the night and managed to wind strings around his neck. I have no clue how long he had been there but I was able to cut the cords off very carefully. He was very sore, he couldn't even make noise and I rubbed his head and neck for close to an hour.

Wow that had to be scary. This is the first time that I have ever heard of a bird chewing up the cage cover. I don't cover my birds as I live in the country and had the electric company remove their security light so there is no light other than the moon coming in at night. I do have a towel on the budgies cage as it makes them feel more secure, it is draped over the top and down one side of the cage but it does not touch the cage. I was just too concerned about the possibility of them chewing on it like so many other birds chew on happy huts and such items so when I added the towel it took me a while but I was determined to not allow it to touch the cage.

If the bird had done this shortly after you covered the cage it would have died during the night so I am betting that it was after it woke up and before you removed the cover, so it was probably not very long, but that was still nearly fatal based on what you have said. I am so glad that you found it in time. How is Connor doing now? I would keep a close watch on him for a day or two as I know that with humans and most other animals that swelling from any injury does not reach its maximum for 24 to 48 hours. Pleas keep us appraised of how he is doing.

I have some Prevue cages and they all turned out to be pretty good because a couple are real old and they don't have a single chip anywhere.

Glad to hear your birds are doing OK but, if I may make a suggestion? If he has chewed his cover this way, it would behoove you to get something like a tarp kind of material instead of anything with a more open weave and some nice chewing toys.

Alright, I was debating getting one for connor since I like the square shape. I feel it has more usable space.
Yep I have a white cloth that is more like a tarp then his old cover on top of that to make sure its dark enough.
