is there anyone here who has been able to buy their own eggs, incubate them and then brood them or is all of that a scam?

Well, it's most likely a scam because it's simply no longer done and any breeder offering fertile eggs for people to buy is, most definitely, NOT a decent person (so the chances are great that the eggs are no good) but it doesn't necessarily have to be a scam in the sense that it can be done. Many years ago, there were stores and even breeders that would sell fertilized parrot eggs for people to put into incubators and raise - and there were also stores that would buy the eggs from breeders (who loved the practice because it would enable them to continue breeding the birds non-stop), incubate them and raise the baby to sell (there was one near where I used to live in West New York, NJ) but there aren't any now because it was found (the hard way) that 'incubator birds' (that's what they were called) had severe (and I do mean SEVERE) psychological issues. It's inevitable. You can't take an animal and raise it completely separate from members of its own species and expect a normal result. Nature doesn't work that way...
