Well, if a bird eats insects during its breeding season in the wild, I would not say they are not essential. I have Red Crested Brazilian cardinals and these birds eat insects during the warm weather months so I always give them some freeze-dried meal worms in the spring and summer. They came to me with bad plumage and the hen had an orange crest instead of red but you should see them now! Beautiful plumage and bright, bright red crests!
