Postby ParrotsForLife » Tue May 24, 2016 3:48 pm

Hello everybody haven't been active in a while busy training and stuff.Well we are getting a Aviary built in the garden and we are gonna start growing Fruit and Vegetables for the birds and hanging perches and stuff in the garden, We already have a swing hanging on the tree we should add more stuff to the tree too I'm sure you could place perches into the tree too.Anybody else here grow their own fruit and veg?

Very cool, the babies will love that.
We sort of grow our our fruit and veg, well really for the fruit the wild grows it. We have over 50 mango trees on our property, heaps of wild pear trees (very floury pears, small, most have worm holes, but they are crispy and delish), lots of macadamias (if that counts, because Till is given some bits from them)my Dad loves cactus and so we get dragonfruits and other cactus fruits from there but they are surrounding our dam, and once again we do not water them or care for them at all.
Other than that we have a few garden beds, where we normaly will have growing tumeric, zucchini, endive and the rest is toxic stuff - herbs such as parsley, eggplant ect:
Really we dont actually grow our foods from outside, we just harvest it

I am also working on a garden so I can have fresh veg for my birds. Fresh picked has the most nutrition and well worth the extra work. I buy from a local produce market that picks their own veg every morning.

I grow some stuff but not all the time and not in great variety or quantity. As a matter of fact, as soon as I finish here, I am going outside to plant 5 tomato (different varieties), 1 Greek and 1 Italian oregano, 1 rosemary, 1 regular and 1 purple basil, 1 thyme, 1 red and 1 yellow pepper and 2 cucumber plants.

Now, make sure you do NOT use treated wood in the aviary even though you will still have to cover it with aluminum sheeting to prevent the birds from chewing it. See this I found today doing research (it seems that the arsenic leaches into the soil!):

I have a number of gardens in my yard, so i am constantly growing good fresh food and some that has to be cooked. I am planting my sweet potatoes now, and we had some of last years barbequed last night and they were so good, and my parrots got some from last night in with there breakfast.

Sounds like you have a great project in the works Brandon, will love to see pics as it progresses.

Yes! We have a 5-in-1 cherry tree and two 5-in-1 pear trees we got this year. Also have peas and a patch I need to clear next month to plant corn in.

Our lawn used to be beautiful but we rented the house out for two years and came back to a wreck. Still recovering ~5 years later.

Yes, it takes years and years to get a 'good' garden going. I've been here almost 5 years and I still don't have a garden that even remotely resembles what I want. And there have been mishaps... my azalea only came back 25%, the rest is all dead and I have no idea why - my rose bush got almost demolished the previous winter when my husband piled up all the snow on it - and the fact that my husband pulled all my 18 oriental lilies because he thought they were weeds did not help things, either (ay, ay, ay) But I will persevere! :D
