Re: How deep do your birds sleep?

Hmmmm, I have heard little sleepy noises from my birds as well as chirps and even words (one of my cockatoos can always be heard saying in a very soft voice "Hello?" when he hears voices outside the birdroom) but they only sound scared if there is something VERY out of the ordinary. It might be better if he sleeps in a room by himself.

Could be... maybe the noise is similar to something else that he learned to be afraid of. But, if your bird screams for 20 minutes before he falls asleep it has to be because he is not been exposed to dusk because birds that are (and this is without exception, mind you), fall asleep on their own once night falls.

I can relate to that as my Grey, Kookooloo does not like it when I leave the room. If I get up to go to the bathroom at night or leave for any other reason, I have to keep up a running dialog with her to keep her from screaming her fool head off and waking my Lady. It does not stop her from talking to me or even whistling for me but it does keep it down in frequency and in volume.

Yes, but is he exposed to the sunset without any artificial lights on and do these lights stay off after he falls asleep? Because it's not so much 'seeing' the sunset but been exposed to its light without the interference of any other light so night falls the same as it would in the middle of the wild and they can sleep in darkness. Check to see if there is any light that comes in - even if it's the smallest amount because the only time I had birds that were upset during the night was because they were getting a bit of light through the window from a street lamp across the street. One night I slept in the birdroom to see what was causing the alarm and saw that there was a sliver of light falling on their cage. Once that was resolved with black-out curtains (drawn after it was complete night and opened before dawn started), I never again had a single problem.

i am not sure this is the depth of sleep but it may be.....Sunny is fairly dopey and grouchy if you wake him up and he acts like a cockatiel even though he is a Meyers and he hisses but is not very aggressive... it is all show. Gaugan wakes up instantly if i wake her and she is wide awake and usually is playfull immediately.
