Just a few more photos of the babies, because I have managed to get them to pose lately (well, Tilly poses, Shrek just runs around like a crazy nutty parrot (unless its snuggle time of course) )

Thankyou Paj Shrek has seriously been crazy lately One minute she is getting a scratch, clucking at me (does it whenever I am near her, I think she wants me to nest with her), or asking me to mate her (tails up), and the next she is running around crazy looking under all the cupboard doors and hopping around like mad.
I have been doing flying exersizes to try to build up her wing strength, it hurts me so see her flutter to the ground, she seems so sad when she fails to fly. Lifting my hand up with her on it, then dropping it down so as she flaps her wings whilst clingging on to my finger, she seems to slowly be building up her stength but it is hard to tell.

Find a hallway or the longest open area in a room and do a slow run the length of it with her on your hand. That will provide a longer flapping time for her than raising and lowering your hand and in turn provide better muscle building opportunity, I would think.

I have also given her a triagular shaped cardboard nest box, but she us not interested and just wants to lay under her paper. I dont know if she is going to lay or not this breeding season, very scary, I am worried about eggbounding, I have given her a calcium bell, take her outside for 1 1/2 hours a week, and gotten a more nutritios nectar that is sweetened with fructose(guessing it is better for her than sucrose?), calcium and D3 in it

Well, she shouldn't be producing sexual hormones yet because their breeding season is September to December so be careful with the light schedule because something could be a bit off.

Considering that sucrose is basically common table sugar ( the hippie culture used to refer to it as white death), fructose, which is a simple sugar often found in fruits, should be better for her than sucrose.

Glucose, often referred to as blood sugar is the body's preferred source of energy, followed by fructose. Sucrose is formed by the combination of two simple sugars such as glucose and fructose and when consumed is broken down into glucose and fructose as the body does not use sucrose.

This is just a very basic breakdown of these sugars, you can easily look up the differences in them online.

Pajarita posted while I was typing the above about sugar So when I saw what she posted I went first to The World Parrot Trust for their link to The Lory Society which took me to Lorikeets.com which is run by the same person as is the Lory Society. There is a load of information about Lories on this last site and one of the things that is brought up is that after the Rainbow Lorikeet reaches 12 months of age it will breed nearly all year long. Wolf, the information on that site was written by a breeder and, as you all know, any bird can be made to breed all year round if you keep it under breeding conditions (the woman actually says that a 9 month old hen can be bred -although she recommends waiting a 'few more months'). Sorry I got back to this so late, I have just looked at all the links posted,

The birds where I volunteer who get 100% natural lighting scheduals are still in breeding, the conures and macaws have just hatched their young, and everyone else is either nesting or very broody at the moment, in addition to this my Muscovies have decided it is breeding season again now (normal breeding is spring (my boy Daisy got into a pretty bad fight yesterday over one of our females).
I think in the wild (from observation) breeding hppens in and during rain, this way the young will be born to pletiful food. It is winter here in Queensland and rain should have stopped already, but we are still getting a heavy rain every 1-2 weeks.
My light schedule is blinds and lights up at 7:00am(one hour after sunnup-when I wake) and lights off at 7:00pm(an 1/2 hour after sun down, covers go on at 8:00pm). Based on the birds around me at the monent, she is in sync with them.
Pajaritas link:Lorikeets in Australia usually tend to breed during spring time (September to December)- this is normal rain season in QLD, however the rain season is continuing for a considerably long time. I am not sure but I beleive our strange choppy weather this year is playing a big roll.
Please let me know whether my light schedules are off please
