In most homes the best we can usually do is to keep them in separate rooms, but they should have separate air supplies to be a true quarantine. From there we need to feed the new bird after we have fed the birds that we already have and then wash before handling either set of birds to help prevent the possible spread of disease, as many of them have an airborne vector as well as a physical contact one. If you interact with the new bird then wash thoroughly with soap and water before interacting with the bird you already have and do the same if you interact with your older bird before interacting with the new bird.
Even when kept for the quarantine period in separate rooms they will be aware of each other and will talk to each other from one room to the next and whether they end up getting along or not they are going to want to meet each other. That should be done after quarantine is over and then under strict supervision only.
