Little bird rescues

Postby Bird woman » Mon Jun 27, 2016 11:42 pm

I've just 4 days ago took in a cockatiel and a parrotlet approx. 1/3 down on average body weight. I don't have much exp. With these small of birds and have been reading as fast as I can. The cockatiel couldn't even perch when he got here , but now he can get on the tiny perch I put close to the bottom of the cage . He's also getting pretty fisty and has already picked up 3 grams. One of his little legs seems stiff but I've been working with it. I'm pretty sure this is mostly due to malnutrition. The parrotlet seems to be getting along better and is stepping up and giving kisses . The parrotlet has the back toe on each foot that curles up kind of over the top of the next toe. Is this normal can't get a good enough picture on the net of there feet, doesn't seem to bother him. I have also placed a heating pad under the grate at night with a towel over the grate so the one that can't perch well stays warm while healing. I gave him a little cubby house and he sleeps in that with the heating pad under it. I've been putting vitamins in there water and introducing them to finely chopped vegies and fruit . Today they got a little sunshine, anything else somebody can suggest that I'm not already doing would be appreciated. And yes they are quarantined far away from the rest of the flock. Thanks guys Bird Woman

No the toe curling up over another toe is not normal and it being black may also not be normal. I have two celestial or pacific parrotlets the female being a hybrid Celestial/ Lucinda cross and in both of these parrotlets the feet and toes are pink. I don't know if any of the other species of parrotlets have black toes and feet of not.

I can't tell by your post but I am hoping that the parrotlet and cockatiel are in separate cages as parrotlets are actually very aggressive birds and I think that being in the same cage with a cockatiel would not be very good for the cockatiel whom I doubt could protect itself from the parrotlet. I am pretty sure that you have already noticed and dealt with this and it is just my not knowing you and knowing the things that some people do to these birds although meaning well that causes my concern.

Hi, Birdwoman, nice to see you back here. I would give them a different kind of leafy green every day (they love greens!). I would also do a liver and kidney detox treatment to help with their weight issues.

The plet toes could have been broken at one point and healed incorrectly but, if he doesn't seem to be bothered by it, it should be OK provided you give him different perches so he can find the most comfortable one.

Thanks for the info., and yes they are now in separate cages apparently they were housed together and I'm sure that's why the little cockatiel is so beat up. In my post it was back toes not black toes. Every day they both seem to be doing better and better ! I've several sizes of small to med/small green branches in there cages and have been having to work with them on the chop. I think the first day I didn't get it fine enough , I'm so used to the big kids ,LOL about the detox what do you use ? As soon as I feel they are healthy enough it will be off to the vet , but I want to make sure there good and stable first as we all know what stress does . I've been reading all the posts on the bird rescue closing or changing hands , very sad situation. I am pretty opinionated when it comes to a lot of rescues , I sure wouldn't start that unless I had a good solid back up plan. I know how things can get out of hand with these birds my Rosie dr. Bills added up to 12 k and I still couldn't save her So to all you people that think it's funny and cute to feed your bird pizza , doritos and big macs hope you have a fat wallet and thick skin when you loose them or are sick for years. Talk later thanks again BIRD WOMAN

Sorry about misreading black as opposed to back. We are all bird people and we all are opinionated about out birds in one way or another and sometimes in several ways. Sometimes that leads to misunderstanding, but as long as we keep talking to each other we can work it out.

Good lord , not a problem ! This little parrotlet is sitting on me while I'm answering this and OMG what a hoot this little guy is just as fun and lovable as the big birds which are now in bed. I have never had exp. With this species and I'm in love and hooked ! Hey Pajarita how about that detox , milk thistle ? I'm going to make apt with my avian specialist soon as they settle down. Thanks again for info. BW

The only thing that I have found with mine is that being so small they tend to bite first and either do it again for good measure or just go on like nothing happened. They are a bit more aggressive at first, but then they are so cute, lively and loveable.

Yes, I use milk thistle (both the liquid non-alcoholic extract in their water AND the capsules mixed in with their soft food), dandelion root (capsules in soft food), methionine (again, capsules) and, if the bird looks to be unstable or kind of off balance (even if it is just a little bit), I give it a bit of lactulose in the water. Oh, and aloe vera juice from the inner leaf in the water, too!

Thanks Pajarta, little birds are doing so well this morning , I'm always amazed at how fast they recover when they are properly cared for. The down side as I have learned the hard way is the permeant damage that may have already been done to them. I've lost 2 of my rescues in 17 years and all the love, money and time couldn't have saved them. It turns me into a wreck and I still cry for them. My vet sternly told me to suck it up , if I'm going to make this my mission in life I better be prepared and be thankful they had a good life before they passed. But that doesn't make it any easier. Well I'm now in love with this little parrotlett and it's only been 5 days and apparently the little guy loves me to cause when my husband came to close the little bugger tried to attack him. LOL wonder how I'm going to work this out with the big kids. I guess another outside space for little birds . BW

I am sure that you already know this but, if you do, just bear with me as I feel compelled to write it, just in case you don't. In my personal experience and as per my beloved Dr. Jodie, the best avian vet I've ever had, birds ALWAYS rally and appear to get MUCH better after their diet, housing and general conditions improve dramatically (and I am talking even blood work results, mind you, not only visually) BUT this 'improvement' might not, necessarily, end up been permanent. When the damage is great, they will improve dramatically at the beginning but the body will 'adjust' to the better conditions and the problems will appear again and stay for good (this happened to me several times).
