It seems to me that the simplest solution is to not go pick him up so much. GCC's are very flock oriented and also they tend to spend as much time as they can with their chosen human or mate as the case may be. The end result is that if he really wants to spend time with you he will either walk over to you or fly to you and I am betting that he will fly to you.

Yep, a flighted GCC will ALWAYS fly to your shoulder.
