bored bird

Postby beaucefus93 » Mon Oct 10, 2016 8:43 am

So ive had my green cheek for about 3 months now and he seems pretty content considering how inactive he is. He never plays with his toys (he has tons) and hes relatively quit. He will dance alil when i tell him to but other that that all he does is climbs around his cage. He climbs around and gets a seed, goes to the top to eat it then climbs all the way down to get another. Is he possably just a laid back bird or whats going on? Thanks! :gcc:

Hmmm, I would say that he is bored... In my personal experience, GCCs want nothing more than to ride your shoulder and cuddle next to your neck, under your hair or burrow inside your clothes but they also like flying around - is your bird clipped or fully flighted? Mine basically eats, drinks, sleeps and cuddles either to me or her mate... she doesn't really play with any toys but, during breeding season, she likes to chew paper and thin cardboard. She also likes to chew on toys that are made out of some kind of soft organic material -kind of like a dry straw or something -like this one: http://www.goldencockatoo.com/planet-pl ... small.html

Until you let his wings grow back you are not really seeing his personality.

It sounds like he was never taught to play with toys. Rambo in his late 20s had never played with toys until Myrtle came along and showed him how. They are flockers and learn from each other how to play and what to eat. The only flock he has is you. Let him out and play with his toys. My birds watch me to know what to eat. Even though I give them a days supply of fruit and veggies in the morning they will eat the most at times when I am eating. They beg to share what is in my plate. I share the legal stuff.

You are his flock.

Well, I tell you, I don't know if this is the case for all the GCCs but, in my personal experience (four of them) and for what I have read here and in other forums about them, clipped GCCs become bitey. I don't know if it's the inability to reach their human when they want to, the complete lack of exercise, the anxiety caused by the vulnerability of not been able to get away from danger or what but this seems to be the norm so, if I were you, I would seriously consider allowing his wings to grow out so he can fly.
