I don't think you are missing anything, Birdwoman. Large species are so deeply imprinted to people that they seldom actually bond with another one, even if it is of the same species and even if it is of the opposite gender BUT amazons seem to be the exception to the rule because they always seem to get along with one another. But, on the other hand, when a male and a female amazon bond with each other, you end up been the fifth wheel and a very unwelcome one at that during breeding season (the worst attack I've ever had was from Zeus when I got too close to Precie and her 'nest' - he made three huge holes in the back of my head). And that is my worry about Liz's plan to adopt another amazon... The ones that bond easily (well, compared to the large ones) are the small species but even the medium ones are iffy. I have gotten my two cockatoos to accept one another as well as my senegals but they haven't really bonded...

I was not looking for another bird but one popped up that I thought needed help. (The other woman was well checked and he will probably be okay.) I would give up some of our bonding if the new bird made Myrtle happy. But I had a backup plan in case she did not want him.

The thing is that amazons are not like cockatiels, Liz, so, if this bird was a male and bonded with either one of your females, it's not a matter of 'giving up some of the bond', it's a matter of been able to handle aggression because even pet male amazons lose the bond with humans to the point of attacking them if they get close to their nest or female. I am sure that you would not have just gotten rid of the bird if this happened but it would have put a huge amount of stress into a situation that is now very good and easy.

We have a few pairs of amazons now. It will be interesting to see how they are. They seem friendly enough so far. I think we have pairs of Yellow shouldered, Lilac crowned, and bowdines. Are slenderbills amazons? We have a pair of them, too.

Also blue bellied Parrots I don't think they are amazons.

Thank you Pajarita. I did not want another bird but wanted him to get out of the dog shelter and I would give him a forever home. I am really glad that the other woman checked out to be a good paront.

There are slenderbilled conures and slenderbilled corellas but you must have the conures because the corellas are cockatoos and easy to identify as such.

The blue-bellied parrots do look like amazons but they are not, they are actually sui-generis like the quakers are. They are supposed to live only in the Southeast of Brazil but there have been sightings of them in my country (Uruguay) and in Argentina. They need an environment super humid so make sure they have a humidifier nearby running all the time.
