New (temporary) flock members

Postby miajag » Mon Apr 12, 2010 1:51 pm

I mentioned in the "Training 2 parrots" thread in the Basic Training and Taming forum that I'm going to be taking care of my friend's bonded pair of Rosy-faced lovebirds while she's away for a few months.

Here's a picture - the male (normal) is named Scooter and the female (I said she was lutino in the other thread but after looking at her more closely I'm pretty sure she's pied) is named Elizabeth.

The cage they're in is less than ideal as it has a rounded top but I don't think it's too bad size-wise (24" wide by 16" deep by about 36" high). They seem to enjoy hopping and flying from perch to perch.

I'm not terribly worried about quarantining them since they went to the vet recently and were given a clean bill of health, but I'm keeping them in a separate room from Winnie for a few days so I can gradually introduce them without freaking everyone out too much.

As I mentioned in the other thread I'm hoping to get them to a point where they're tame enough to be handled. For the time being though, they're very interesting to just watch. One really cute thing I've noticed they do is, when they want to scratch their head, instead of bending forward and raising a leg to scratch like my Quaker, they actually lean backward and bend a leg back behind their wing to scratch that way.
