Bird Flu in UK

Postby Loriusgarrulus » Sat Dec 24, 2016 2:43 pm

The dreaded bird flu is about again. We have penned the chickens in their run which is roofed over and mesh too fine for wild birds to get in.
Being careful as don't want any sick chickens or parrots.

Yes, I've heard it on the news. It is also now in South Korea. I'm abstaining from chicken for now. With that, I"m going to clean the bird cage regularly. Then fumigate and clean my room, and to be sure I'm going to use an air purifier on my room and the kids room.

I am still eating chicken. Cooking properly destroys it. Even when I BBQ I still pre-cook chicken in the oven first to make sure.

The risk to non poultry workers is extremely low.
If your fumigating be careful what you use near your parrots.
Air purifiers don't normally remove virus only dust particles and some bacteria unless you have one with a micron fliter on it.
Below gives you an example of water filtration size of filter you need. Hepa filters on air purifiers rarely go finer than 0.3 microns
While protozoa such as Giardia (shown below) and Cryptosporidium are about 5 microns in size, water filters miss bacteria such as Cholera, E. Coli, and Salmonella (0.2 – 0.5 microns) and viruses such as Hepatitis A, rotovirus and Norwalk virus (.004 microns)
