New and need help

Postby debbieknd » Wed May 05, 2010 5:56 pm

Hello everyone.. :budgie: My husband and I take in many unwanted and mistreated birds
Yesterday We were brought an parakeet with an odd beak..actually it cere...I never seen this before
My first thought was to file it down..like we do many of our parrots with broken beaks.
She looks healthy except her cere..no crusted just this odd growth..
Any help or advice I would be truely thankful for

Awww... I feel sorry for the little guy. You'd probably have more experience since you have 25 birds and I only have 2. Is he able to eat and breath ok? This may sound obvious, but do you have an avian vet near by that can take a look? Good luck figuring out what is wrong and let us know how the little guy is doing.

It looks like it could be this but I'm no expert. Your best bet is an avian vet.

Cere (the fleshy skin located at the base of the upper beak)

* Symptoms: Hyperplasia (proliferation of cells), cornification and keratinization of the cere (it may develop a "hornlike" appearance. It is displayed as a thickening to this area; brown in color.

* Possible Cause: Brown Hypertrophy: A condition most often seen in budgerigars, to a lesser exent in other psittacines. It can progress to close up the nostrils (nares) causing beak breathing. It is not critical unless it begins to block the nasal passage.

Oh thank you so much
No I am watching her and it does not appear to be a problem with her eating and her nostril are clear of the growth
Now that I know the name of this problem I will do some research.
I do have an Avain vet ..Thank you once again

Hahaha. Let me put you out of your worries. Thats nothing serious!
When female budgies get into their breedingperiod their ceres turn darkbrown to black in colour and start to get flaky in texture. Sometimes the 'flaking' gets a bit out of hand and you get these kind of growths. It's nothing serious and will fall off after the breeding period is over.
