Well...this is really a personal thing.

I mean, kids will surely provide things that a parrot can not.

However, speaking as someone who doesn't want kids (might change my mind down the way but for now..not in my plans at all), birds, although I might worry for their well being and health, will not provide me with the amount of worry and grief a kid might. Although parrots are somewhat expensive to keep, the cost of parrot ownership does not compare to the cost related to raising a kid. And although I must plan to have birds birdsat when I feel like going somewhere for an extended period of time, it's much easier to plan travel when owning birds than having kids...

I wouldn't say parrots are better than children. Asking this question and providing a response gets a bit personal, but here goes. I don't have any biological children. My husband has an 11-year old daughter and a 16 year-old son from his first marriage. My step-daughter lives with her mom and my step-son lives with us. I've only been in their lives for 5 years, but being a parent is very rewarding. It does present its challenges at times and has its ups and downs, but earning their love and trust has been very rewarding for me. My husband and I don't plan on having any children together. I never planned on having kids before I met him, but have 2 amazing step-kids that I love as if they were my own.

I have no problem saying that Lucy and Jessie are my feathered kids. They bring joy to my life every day and I'm crazy about them, but they can't match the pride and joy I feel about my step-kids. Having said that, because we're not having any kids of our own, that's one reason why I decided to get one more bird.

Maybe another question to ask is 'Why are parrots better than other types of pets?"

We're not comparing them to other pets here though. I think there really are people who think parrots are better than kids or at least that they have certain characteristics that make them better than kids to them (not necessarily to replace all together but more enjoyable or easier in those regards).

You sure don't mind stirring the pot, do you?

Since I assume the point here was humor....

... they don't ever want to borrow the car on Friday night.
... they don't insist you buy them the latest gadget because all their friends have one
... they don't run up your mobile phone bill
... you never have to worry that they actually did that because of YOUR genes

They don't grow up to be bratty teenagers and failures as adults. Parrots are like always having a little toddler who's emotional range predominantly feels love for you (with fear and bad days and tantrums and boredom as well, but I think for companion parrots, most of their "feeling" is, wow I love my companion this is great. And who are smart enough to keep up with you, given patience, but not too smart to outsmart you (in most cases).

Really, I like animals more than people any and every day of the week.

Also a reason I really love birds in general is because if you gain their trust enough that they realize they CAN bite you and choose not to, it's really saying something.

Parrots don't ruin people's lives and turn them into boring lamesters with no money and no free time.

(yes, I'm a little bitter about several of my friends who have had kids recently)
