Bird TAlk

Postby tattoo » Tue May 18, 2010 1:56 pm

I didn't look to far back for it but did anyone post about the BIrd Talk Magazine this month? Senie's got the center fold! They also talked about them and said they live up to 50 years.. I always read 25-35 years. Has anyone seen this yet? :senegal:

Haven't gone mine yet.

As for the age, I think 50 is pushing it. 25-35 years I believe is the average but that is not to say that there aren't exceptions.

What do you mean by "average?" Average age if fed a perfect diet and avoiding all accidents and illnesses? Regardless of how long they technically can live, in reality parrots rarely live anywhere near their maximum age.

Do all the premature deaths (of stress, illness, and bad handling) count into that statistic? From personal experience and talking to others, I've noticed that the first year is quite fragile. If they make it through that, they're usually good for life (aside from accidents). if 5-10% of parrots of a certain species die before 1, wouldn't that drastically lower the average known age of the species? So is the 25-35 year point a typical full life span or a statistical average? Any mathematicians?

I don't have a subscription ... so I guess I'm going to the pet store close to work today to pick one up. Can't miss a Senegal cover :)
