Weird question

Postby Java » Sat May 29, 2010 5:41 pm

And please forgive me but I don't know how else to ask this question.

Sometimes, when Java is on my shoulder, I feel something like a rubbing feeling and I will look over at him and it appears he will be humping (sorry, cannot think of a better word) my shoulder. I am wondering if this is something real or am I imagining it, and maybe he just had a twitch or something. I do not encourage it and when I think he is doing it, I put him back in his cage, but I was just curious.

If he is doing this, is this a male behavior or do both sexes do this?

Not positive, but pet shop told me 8-1/2 months when I bought him, have him about 3-4 weeks, so 9 months old or so?

Sounds a bit young for that sort of behavior but it's possible. I think females go about it a different way though. They do a little mating dance and then stick their butt out and wait for you to do the rest.

Ok, thanks Michael. Might have been my imagination, but will keep an eye out for it again if it should happen.

Hi Java,

I go through a similar thing. All of my bird books that I've read also mention things about birds masturbating. At first, my conure was using his blanket as his "mate" and made a humping motion over it after doing a little mating dance thing (he would flap his wings and bob his head really low.) I really always just let him do his thing - but then - he started to do it on me. I don't encourage this behavior but I don't punish him either. I just move him off of me when he does it and he will then stop shortly after.

There are videos on youtube (i know it sounds weird) but you can compare just to ease your mind and see if your bird is doing the same thing.

They don't all masturbate. My senegal is 3 years old and has only done the mating dance for me a couple of times and never masturbated so far. In fact, I've never seen any of my birds masturbate. If it becomes a regular behavior, it is considered displacement behavior and the bird will need some more activity introduced to keep him busy.

So in other words, it's what they resort to when they have nothing better to do?
