my friends has a cockatoo and she went out one day and he unlocked the door and chewed a nice big tunnel right through her mattress on her bed :)

but coming down to my birds i would expect my lorikeet to pull all the keys off my keyboard. throw everything off my desk open his bags of food (which are powder) annoy my budgie and if any of my draws are open fall alseep in my clothes and act like hes done nothing wrong. if my budgie was out i dont think much would happen maybe a few messes around the place and if he gets into his millet then the husks would be everywhere, my lorikeet is the worry :)

I answered now because Jessie got out for a couple hours one afternoon while we were at work and didn't really touch anything. My step-son was home, but had no idea that Jessie was out of his cage. Nothing was destroyed. I could tell where he was from where he pooped but he didn't chew or destroy anything.

However I think the situation would be different if Lucy were to be out by herself. She is a chewer and I'm afraid to think of what she would chew.

My room is bird proofed for the most part. Sometimes it's hard to see hazards before they come hazards (like falling between the bed and the wall and getting stuck). One time I did leave the room for what I thought would be 2 minutes, and ended up being 20. My bird is clipped, and when I found her, she was across the room, perched on a wicker basket that I keep all my shoes in, chewing on the wicker. I couldn't tell if she got spooked and flew, or if she crawled all the way down my bed and down the side to get there, but she seemed okay. But if that much happened in 20 minutes I can only imagine the damage in a 4-6 hour outing.

I honestly feel that Charlie would sit on top of his cage, and climb back in when he wanted to eat. There has been times where I let him out when he wakes up at 730am, and i will fall back asleep (in the same room) for about another four hours. I wake up to find him sitting on top of his cage, sleeping as well - he is the laziest bird alive.

I came home one day to find Zuri out of his cage; he has sneaked out one of the side doors (which are now held closed with added baby links). This was in the old appartment.

By the appearance of things, he didn't do much but play with some toys that were ok to destroy.

I've fallen asleep with Kili out before. However, usually sleepy weather that puts me into a nap midday does no less for her so she'll just sleep on a perch or top of her cage. She is flighted so I'm not worried about her finding her way back to where she needs to be. I don't recall "saving" her much or ever when she is out when I am home, so I don't think that would be the issue of leaving her out while I am gone. However, I'm certain that if she stayed out on her own long enough (especially her more active times) she'd start getting into trouble more. Especially if I left her out like this regularly. Which is why I intend to be more careful to close her door right away instead of leaving it for later. Now that I think about it, this same situation where I let her crawl in and forgot to close door happened before once. But that time I was home all day and was just surprised to walk up to her cage and find her on top of it rather than in it. I wouldn't have known she was left out otherwise cause she wasn't getting into trouble or going anywhere.

Well, first and foremost, I'd have little confidence the bird would be OK, especially if I also neglected to close the office room door.

If he were flighted, he'd no doubt chew the rubber trackwheel out of my mouse and chew on various electrical wires and eat the rubber buttons off the phones, at least until he got tired of that. He's too small to really wreck havoc on the wooden furniture. But really, I'd be more worried about his safety than that of the house.

I voted yes because of that.

I voted no, as our Tim and Prince have been left out of their cage many a time if I'm only going out for a short time, you can read why if you follow the link Michael put up.
The only damage they ever do is chew the odd piece of fruit if it's left out and push all paper onto the ground. Our birds all have a sleep in the middle of the day anyway.
We leave nothing out that could harm the birds, so while they don't have their own room, our kitchen/front room/loungeroom is bird friendly. It also flows into each other so I can leave them out all day and know what they're up to. They'll happily pig out on the fruit bowl, so that rarely gets filled anymore, but it only ever had bird friendly foods in it anyway. We're very strict on NOT leaving food out that could hurt the birds, but also not leaving food out in general, my brother has a disease cause by food poisoning, so everything gets put away. I don't know about you guys, but here our windows HAVE to have screens to stop embers coming in during Bushfire season, so there's no worry there, and we don't leave our ceiling fans on.
I guess the only non-bird-proof thing is our power cables(that Mali loves climbing up off the floor with), but they're pretty out of sight, and Tim and Prince don't go exploring in this section of the house, they more go exploring if you leave doors open and they can get into bedrooms. But they're still birdproof.
