Lost cockatiel in our front yard, won't come down.

Postby entrancedbymyGCC » Fri Jun 11, 2010 8:45 pm

We left out a millet spray in hopes of enticing him down, but so far he's not given any indication he'd like to be caught. Must be someone's lost pet. Unfortunately we are going out of town overnight starting early tomorrow. He's not likely to survive forever on his own. :-(. Any ideas to get him to come down?

Can you reach the branch he's on? Maybe try to talk to him and get a perch for him to step up on...

If you take Scooter out in a travel cage maybe he'll grab the tiels interest. Or, maybe just a small cage with food in it left close to where the teil is? He must be hungry.

He's WAAAY up high, we don't even have a ladder near that size. We will try putting a cage out, we have an old one from Bill's mom's bird.

Well he's screaming to us and acts like he wants to come down, but is too scared. He's 30-50' up. We took Scooter out to talk to him, no go. Now the cage is sitting out there with millet, food and water...

Sounds like he probably doesn't know how to come down. Do you know of any contractors or repairmen sorta of guys in your neighborhood that might have a tall ladder? For all we know it could be a clipped cockatiel that got caught in a gust of wind and got up there but doesn't know hot to come down. I doubt it's an unclipped one or it would have flown some place else in all this time. If it's flighted it could fly down but seems like it's been in one place for long in which case it means that without human assistance, it's not coming down.

o my gosh poor thing.... so its to hight to ladder you probably couldnt climb it but what if you could somehow get a stick high enough up there and you could smear some yogurt or something on it an it would step on the perch branch and you could bring him down?

Poor little guy. Have you checked Craigslist for your area or other sites like it? If somebody is looking for him, they could sort out how to get him down.

I'm feeling bummed. He apparently settled down for the night well before dark and we thought he had flow away somewhere, but when we got up this morning he was still in the tree, calling. Unfortunately, we had to leave town early this morning and are currently in Lone Pine having driven through Death Valley (my husband is running from Badwater to Mount Whitney in August and this was planned training and course recon). If he's still there and kicking when we get back, the only thing I can think of is to call the fire department. Our best guess is that he's fully feathered but not experienced at flying and afraid to come down. Since there was no wind yesterday, I doubt he blew up there, not 2/3 of the way up a 100' tree.

I tried searching for lost ads, but we are in such a heavily populated area it's like looking for a needle in a haystack.
