Duke

Postby Michael » Sun Oct 18, 2009 11:07 pm

Since I don't think Kathleen wants to be the one to break the bad news, I will just lay it out here.

Duke, our budgie, died last night. He had been sick for nearly a month now. His weight was consistently low for a month, and we figured he was sick for at least 2-3 weeks. We had someone check him out and we were giving him in antibiotic for two weeks but it never seemed to help. We were surprised he was holding out so long so we thought he'd get better. In more recent weeks he was not getting better but neither worse. We pretty much stopped training him for a month now but he seemed to miss his training so we would take him out once in a while and just have him do a couple tricks for an entire stick of millet. That would actually encourage him to eat more than if we would just leave it in his cage. It's like he would want to eat down every little bit of his hard earned treat.

Here's a final fairwell video to Duke who was our little friend for 5 months. Video features our first moments with him through the last video of him from just last night.

Thanks everyone. We'll really miss him. Even in just 5 months, he was the best trick trained budgie I have ever come across.

The first year seems to be a tough one for small birds and they are just so fragile. Anyway, thanks for all the support.

I was always very impressed with the videos of him, definitely the smartest budgie I've seen. You can tell that he was very loved and well taken care of.

Hi Kathleen and Michael:

I am so sorry for your loss. Budgies can be so fragile. It is so sad to lose a companion. They are such gifts!

Do you have any idea why he was sick?

Thanks!
