Bones from a tropical bird species that survived when the others died off and ended up dying when men came into the picture yielded EXCELLENT DNA samples! First the link telling you about it and second a link to the genus. There are no representations of the actual species for which they found the DNA because tropical animals decompose too fast for anything to remain after a few years so this is a HUGE thing!
As a note, the Caracara is a type of Central and South American hawk with a couple of species. They are all over the place -at least in my country where they are called 'caranchos'... so much so that you find numerous folk songs and sayings about them (I was listening to a poem that mentions them just this morning!).
