Do petitions work?

Postby Pajarita » Wed Feb 05, 2020 9:17 am

This is just my personal opinion so, please, feel free to comment/argue on this.

I think they do. And I think they do it two ways. The first and obvious way is that a large number of signatures does put pressure on companies and governments to change for the better. But I also think there is another way they help - and that is that the more people that is exposed to what is happening out there, the faster societies change for the better.

A couple of examples that are not seen on the news and that illustrate the need for change - because, if we don't, our children (it used to be grandchildren but things are getting bad real fast now)`will suffer living in a semi-destroyed world.

This is about the poor elephant beaten and whipped at a Buddhist temple - the poor thing was crying and howling in pain until he collapsed in a pool of dirty water and would not get up (there is no video so you can look at it, Liz).

And this is about a recent seizure of pangolins scales (taken from 50,000 animals and every single species of pangolin is endangered!) by the Chinese.

An article on why horse racing is cruel - as a side note, most people do not know that horses were not created to race the way we make them do. We were able to breed the muscles needed for it but their lungs cannot sustain the oxygen intake necessary and their bones are too thin and brittle for it. It is cruel and it is morally wrong no matter how you look at it!

More examples of going in the wrong direction:

Rigged process in Cameroon for palm oil fields could harm habitat of 26 species of medium and large mammals, including elephants, buffalos, great apes, panthers and pangolins.

Campaign by fur producers claiming that the animals in the farms are treated right (a lie, of course).

Because of the 200,000 signatures in a petition, they will add ballot initiative for reintroducing gray wolves in Colorado.
