I wonder how this balance may have shifted with new members so I bring this poll back up. It is 10/18 M/F as of this point.

Is it that more women own parrots? Or ownership is more even but women like to talk on forums about them more? What do you think?

I'm female.

I've noticed a lot of women own parrots in my general area when compared to males. I'm not sure why that is, though. I have a hunch that it may just be because women are more vocal about their interested in birds as compared to males.

That said, I also don't like the idea that females = subordinate, as mentioned by Entranced. When I was a kid, I wanted to work with the NSA as a cryptographer. When I got older, I wanted to be/will be a geneticist. Both fields are dominated by men, but not impossible for women.

I think women get away with chatting on a forum at work more easily than men do, instead of more women own parrots.

I'm so kidding!

I don't notice more women than men inquiring or buying birds from me. They just seem to want them for differing reasons.

Female!

I guess a lot of parrots also tend to take more to women than to men... Not always the case of course, but I think it's because of the softer, higher voices and women usually wear their hair longer too... makes for better preening. ;)

I'm sure there are a lot of husbands that get a parrot and it decides to like their wife instead. I guess it could be a contributing factor.

That's interesting cause I always thought it was the opposite. I often see women being too easy on their birds or inconfident that the bird totally takes advantage of them. Like I encounter women who won't take charge of the bird. They let the bird do whatever it wants because they are afraid to upset it. Now I'm not suggesting that a hard cocky approach is the way to go either, but to me it seems that men who are into birds take a more direct/disciplined approach with them.

Well somebody has to help Michael and chime in for the guys

Saerphe, my Maroon Belly seems to be the opposite and has a hate on for women (right now anyway). He won't let my wife anywhere near him (or me for that matter, he goes into full attack when she comes near me) .

I'm with you Michael. It seems to me the men have less behavioral problems. My sex, we're usually the Disneyland parent. Even at my house. My birds (dogs too) are fine with me, but they cross the boundary with me quite often to test. Everyone behaves for my husband, and he's not a harsh disciplinarian either. He's just consistently firm and they know not to bother testing.
