Oh my gosh.
Reading about these people who have no idea what a real parrot does makes my brain hurt.

Mine too! How can people be so thick! I got a really stupid one the other day and it was a friend of mine so I just punched him and called him and idiot but then we laughed about it. He said

"Oh my god!!! That is the most beautiful colors on cockatoo I've ever seen" When he was talking about my cockatiel. -.-

How can you get the two mixed up didn't make sense to me even a baby cockatoo is quite large when its young.
It seemed funny to me how do you get this :greycockatiel: mixed up with this :cockatoo:.

Go apologize to your friend cause he's right and you're wrong. A Cockatiel is a certain species of Cockatoo, just like Galah, Sulpher Crested, and Palm are species of Cockatoo.

These stories make me so irritated. I think that I'm going to explode. I want to do something about those annoying people so bad, but I can't.

Honestly, I enjoy combating ignorance. I see my irn as kind of an ambassador to the ignorant. If someone has never seen a parrot in their life, then they only have Hollywood to go off of.

It's like growing up in my school where I was the only Asian person there. I would get asked questions like "why do you use chopsticks? How do you eat soup?"

As long as people are earnest about their questions I don't mind. Though the "does it bite" question is tricky. I get lazy sometimes and just say Ace only bites strangers, rather then explain what his triggers are. Also, I don't let Ace be handled by women with shiny nails and jewelry. As a consequence, he's scared of women with jewelry now.

Yes - anyone you canteach is one more person who know. You never know when that person will come across a parrot owner who will need that knowledge.

People are always so surprised when they find out I COOK for my bird, they are sometimes even surprised by the fact that he gets fresh fruits and veggies.

"You cook for a bird? Are you going insane? Just throw some seed in there."

So then I try to educate them and tell them how a bird needs a balanced diet of pellets, fruits, and veggies...but they don't believe me.

Also, a friend who has never been around parrots before came to see mine. He stood in front of the page and kept saying "polly want a cracker". He then asked if my bird had some sort of mental dificiency because it wasn't "repeating everything he said like on TV" LOL!

The one that takes the cake is a conversation I had with a woman that went like this :

Lady - "what kind of bird is he?"

Me - "He is a Senegal"

Lady - "where are they from?"

Me - "uhhh.....Senegal"

Lady - *blank stare*

Me - "oh uh its in west africa"

I just walked away but I was dying laughing to myself. Of course I know that they are from more than just Senegal, but it never occured to me that someone would have to ask where the bird is from when one of the countries is the birds namesake.

That said I showed everyone a mislabelled map i came across and no one found it funny because they couldnt find the error the news channel had made. Maybe she didn't know that Senegal was A - a country or B- in Africa.

Oh...
I didn't even know that Senegal the country existed until you wrote about that...
Maybe the woman was okay about it. That conversation sounds like what I would say, except for the first part. But from that I don't think the woman is one of those arrogant people who assume they know everything there is to know about parrots.
