people buy parrots and dont have the time for them

Postby TheNzJessie » Fri Jul 23, 2010 4:39 am

i browse a online site called trademe ALOT i buy a lot of toys at factory prices from there, you can also sell your own and pets etc

it frustrates when i see birds listed on there with an excuse like (owner has moved overseas urgent sale CHEAP) or we cannot spend the time with him he deserves so must me moved along) ethier thewy dont know the life span of the birds they buy in the first place or they never expected them to live or magically disapare when they want to move overseas or have a baby

whats your opinion when you see birds listed like this?

heres a few examples with the same typical excuse

We have those over here too. Mostly its african greys, since they are the cheapest big parrot for sale. Plus they sell them on every streetcorner.
I think a lot of people see an add, or a parrot for sale in a shop and think it would be a really cool idea to own a parrot. So they decide to bring it home. They wont realise what they bought untill a couple of days later, the parrot has overcome the shock of being moved and starts to act like a real parrot.

Like said in numerous topics before. Most people dont realise that a parrot is smarter than a dog and can live at least twice as long (in most cases).

The last one is a perfect example as to why I believe most kids should not have birds.

I hate that, the ringneck is absolutely gorgeous! If it were in the US my mom would want it. Pitty.

I see it a LOT with cockatoos around here. People don't realize how attached and demanding they are, they lose interest quickly in always having to hold it. They tend to pluck and go to rescues, or be sold to breeders.

People impulse shop. Not a big deal if you're buying a car...it either works for you or not...but it has much more of an impact when an animal is involved...but most people don't see this. They consider animals 'things', in the same category as the car, or their iPod. They just want their instant gratification.

We are also increasingly becoming conditioned to frequent changes. Look at our television use...channel surfing, commericials with frames that go by so quickly you can only grasp a quick idea of what the image even was...

So a long-lived pet becomes boring quickly - and most people don't stick with something they find boring, or find ways to prevent boredom from setting in.

The ones that bother me are the ones where people want to trade their pets, and this is most common with birds & reptiles I've noticed. A living being is not an item you can just have around until you get sick of it and trade it in for something else. I've even seen an ad of someone who wanted to trade their 2 year old bird for a baby bird of the same species. How is this considered okay?

There are people like that. Many years ago, I think it was a news item, a woman kept having babies...and then giving them up for adoption when they reached to be around 7 years old. She didn't like older children...

...even her own...

I can understand your frustration... I just don;t understand either... my birds are the love of my life, and I just can't understand that people buy a bird but don't give it the attention the birdie needs! Image

What I hate the most are the resellers.
They pick up birds "cheap" from people looking to re-home them then sell them to make a profit

I 'troll' kijiji alot and see birds up for sale that are sold and literally a week later they are up again but this time it is a guy with a TON of ads of birds 'for sale' usually listed as breeder birds.

Trolling tonight I came across this nice one.....4 week out lovebirds "almost weaned, ready to go"
http://toronto.kijiji.ca/c-pets-birds-f ... Z219316602 ....it really makes you wonder

....another 'reason' it seems to be popping up more often now in my area at east is females that lay eggs....they sell them to be a breeder if the bird is a pet or not.
