I started with a bird. My dads chickens

When I was 9 or 10 I got my first budgie, Koosje. I had about three or four before I reached an age I wasnt that interested anymore. When I was 11 my mom got a westy for her birthday (thats a dog, for you bird people out there).
Afterwards my pet collection just got larger and more exotic. I had fish, turtles, rats, a snake, guineapigs and so on. When I was 18 I got my own dog Daan. My bf had two dogs as well, so when we moved in together the menagerie just grew.

At the moment I have three dogs, a senegal, a cockatiel, an aviary with various parakeets and a bf.
Since our dogs are all elderly and will probably be gone withing the next 5 years, we are thinking of getting a cat and a dog together next time

Believe me, if I had the chance to care for a lion I would be happy to scoop poop all day!

I am finding myself insanely envious of Nathaniel. O.o

I have two birds, a freshwater community tank with mollies, plecos, dojo loaches, and dwarf frogs. A betta and chinese algae-eater, and hopefully my cat will come home with us soon... We can't currently have cats where we live but ah... We may be sneaky. ;)

I love "exotic" pets. Even though rats aren't that exotic, and neither are fish.

I'm also very, VERY involved in taking care of my animals. I know some people will clean out the cage, play with it maybe an hour a day, and feed and water it. I make 70% of all my animals' toys and 90% of all their food, train them, they're definitely my biggest commitment, even bigger than work or school.

Not sure if I'd get my own dog, even though I love them and my parents have one that I could consider mine, because I know I'd be one of those owners that splurged on their dog and bought it everything.

ME TOO. I'd love to have those reptiles. Esp beardies.

I've been animal crazy since I can remember...but my parents weren't of the same mind-set...lol...

However, I gave myself a bit more leeway as an adult. I'm also a biolgist, so that's given me another POV regarding animals, behaviour, etc., both from a nature and food production perspective.

Currently we have:

4 dogs
2 house cats
1 snake
3 aquariums (2 freshwater, 1 saltwater)
Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches
chickens
horses
feral barn cats

I have the 5 parrots, my daughter still has 2 old finches and the 2 budgies.

I've also had:

Gerbils
Guinea Pigs
Hedgehog
Rats
Lizards
Turtles

Now that the kids are older (my youngest is 15) we're easing out of having so many. By the time everyone is off and on their own I will have less to look after.

Other pets led me to birds. My parents were always animal lovers. I've had a number of different animals over the years when I was younger.

Family Pets:
Past: 2 Dogs, 2 Cats, a Rabbit, and many fish I can't put a name to other than neon tetras lol
Current: 1 Dog - A hound mix who has a bunch of phobias to work on... and a few fish.

My Animals:
Past: A Guinea Pig, 5 Fancy Mice, A Gerbil, 15+ Fancy Rats, 4 Chinchillas, 3 Budgies.
Current: 1 Senegal Parrot

Half the animals I looked after weren't even mine, personally. The gerbil, 3 mice, 3 chinchillas, 4 rats were my siblings' pets. I have always been the one to end up caring for the majority of the animals that enter this home. After going through so much in my life on a personal level. I needed an emotional break from it all. Rats had been a huge part of my life though... my last rat passed away the beginning of this year. I will not be adopting anymore animals for awhile til I get myself and Cody back on a track again.

Now how I came about owning a parrot. I was never really a bird person, actually their feet were creepy to me haha... But my grandmother suggested to adopt a Canary and instead I ended up with my aunt unexpectedly coming to my door to give me 2 budgies(the third Budgie came in after one of the others passed away). I honestly didn't know what to say after her driving for two hours to my home, couldn't say no at all. I was young and had no idea what I was doing with the budgies. During that time I got over the bird feet issue and those small birds converted me into a bird lover. :D I then decided to adopt a Senegal when I was 13.. after a full year and a half of researching on parrots in general.

As you can see I've gone way down in the number of pets to care for because I learned over time my limit. One Senegal is enough for me at the moment but I do wish to adopt more animals someday. ^_^
