Mouse-Bird Problem!

Postby Tarsun » Sun Aug 15, 2010 10:48 am

Recently, there's mice in my apartment. I was surprised when I found out we had mice in my apartment! It's crazy, I hate mice. I don't know how we got it. I'm a clean freak. The caretaker of my apartment building said there's going to be mice in the apartment in the summer, but they go away in the winter. Because they make their homes behind the radiator and when it gets really hot in the winter they leave :?

So here's the real story behind the mice! Every night they crawl up to my bird's cage and try eating my bird's food. At first I didn't realise it until I heard noise and turned on the lights and see 2 mice running out of my bird's cage. The next day I set up mouse traps and emptied my bird's food dish every night. I caught mice and didn't see them bothering my bird in 3 days. And after the 3 days, there we go again they went up to my bird's cage trying to find food, but they couldn't because there was none. I emptied out my bird's food dish. Very smart of me  But still, there are days they'll go up to my bird's cage and my stupid bird won't even sqawk when they go into his cage, he'll just cling onto the bars of his cage and do nothing. But it's up to me to chase the mice away. My dad wanted to put rat poison in our apartment to avoid mice going up to our bird's cage. But I'm afraid it might harm our bird, even if we evacuate it from our apartment the day we put rat poision. Anyone have any suggestions? Before I buy a huge snake to gobble mice in my apartment up

You shouldn't have mice in the place. Your landlord should take care of it in all appartments, because even though you take care of yours, they'll always come back.

I once had mice, they came in through my garage and ate my guinea pigs food. I had an exterminator come, he put some kind of mice food that poisons them, and disintegrates them afterwards, so you don't have to worry about them rotting between the walls. It wasn't dangerous for my dogs and guinea pigs, because it wasn't sprayed, it was just pieces of dry food (he put them in between walls, up on the roof ect., so no animal could get to it), about half the size of a golf ball.

Call someone, you'll see. And give the bill to your landlord...

Ieuw I hate mice. Whe have them in our outside aviary, which is something that you cant really fight against. But indoors, yuch! Unfortunately, once you see one, you have at least 10. Filthy little creatures.

Its a good thing you took away the foodbowls. I heard they urinate everywhere and it makes birds ill. Its supposedly one of the main reasons why aviary birds get sick.
I use vases as traps. Did you get a close look at where they leave the cage? Usually its in the corners. If you put a vase down there with about 4 inches of water you can catch them easily without being afraid you poison your bird or catching other pets in a snapping trap.

But this is definately the landlords problem! Its bullshit that they come in summer and leave in winter. In summer theres enough food to be found outdoors and nice weather ti survive. They come inside during winter when its nice and cozy indoors and we and our pets provide enough food for them to survive.

Hey guys, thanks for replying! I found a solution to my problem. I had my bird evacuated to the living room for a few days and we got rid of the mice in the bedroom, now we have my bird in the bedroom back again, however we're working on the living room and kitchen now. What a hot mess!

I found that stuff too! I actually found it at my sister's apartment and I took it home and scattered it across the floor underneath the radiator, where the mice usually hide/ or makes their homes at.

Eww mice urine. Gross. Thank god I I emptied out food bowls, it actually kept them out for a few days from coming inside my bird's cage. I soaked his cage parts in warm water and washed it after hearing about mice urine. I'm happy now, mice free...yaay...I hope we don't get them back EVER again

We paid an exterminator to set traps everywhere. Which sadly turned out to be an utter waste. After time went on the spring traps would just go off themselves.. Then one day my aunt saw a glue trap set incorrectly and just turned it a bit. The next morning it caught a mouse and that was that never saw one again. It is amazingly unsettling though.

Mice walk into the boxes, eat the poison, than run out again. They die some 24 hours later. Your cat might pick it up before than. Or it will pee in your birds water first and get some poison into his system too.

I wouldnt use them.

I definitely would worry about poisoning my birds if I laid out poison for mice. My last apartment had mice, but they magically disappeared after I adopted a boa constrictor.... hmmm... (NOT because the snake ate them... she was very well secured in her tank... but I think the mice could sense her there).

Glue traps are horribly cruel (and dangerous if your bird comes in contact with one), and poison can be dangerous for other pets. The Havaheart traps are ineffective... the vase trick sounds neat, but I have never tried it personally. Snap traps, as annoying as they are, are probably the best bet.

I agree with everyone else though--your landlord should deal with this. The only downside to that is that he/she might use poison. Maybe you can deal with it however you want and then deduct cost from rent?
