Outings

Postby MissLady9902 » Wed Nov 04, 2009 1:22 pm

Today I took Marvin :gray: to one of my favorite local pet stores. The people there are really nice. I wanted to get Marvin a
harnass so that I could take him outside when the warm weather comes back. They let me try it on him and even helped.
Marvin is so good for an African Grey! He wasn't scared at all! He whistled at the other birds and was polite to the owner while she held him!
I'm excited that I can take Marvin out. This is a good thing to do while he's young so it's not an issue when he's older.
I have also brought him to work with me and he's been very entertaining!

Do you take your birds with you when you go some places? Where do you go with your birds? What do you use for their travel cage?

For outings with Duke, I used a small carrier just like that one but in blue to carry him in. It is fine for a budgie, a lovebird, a parrotlet or any other small parrots and birds. It's nice that it had perches for him inside (two small plastic perches) but sometimes they would fall off onto the bottom. He didn't mind being in there and I'd hang a toy and a food bowl in there for him. The major problem with this carrier is it's very open and definitely not a good choice for taking your bird out (when you have to) during cold weather.

The carrier is small, inexpensive and not that secure by itself (it only locks by friction, really) so I would recommend anyone who gets this to get a type of lock like this:

By the way, has it been hard to get Marvin used to the harness? Does he try to bite it off?

I don't really bring my birds anywhere other than to parrot club meetings or meetings with other parrot people.
I use cat carriers for my guys. I've added a perch in each of them and they don't seem to mind it.

Each bird has it's designated carrier and the cat has one as well.
The birds have a small cat carrier, the cat has a medium size one.

Actually..I have more.
I have seen some on sale and grabbed extras; I want to change the one I have for Petey (I hate the door on it) and some are different models (one has a grate/grill type thing on top and I could possibly have a perch on it and the whole thing can act at a perch when I go to places with them...Plus, I do want more birds in the future (at least that one female Red-bellied..)

Yeah..I have carrier buying syndrome ;)

He tried to bite it off at the store but I think it was too lose.
It was a fun time trying to get it on him! (not)
I would definitly feel better about taking him places if he was in the harnass.
He's jumpier than noodle and may get scared and try and fly off.
The pet store gave him a severe wing trim so he kind of falls more than glides to the floor.

I try to take Harley everywhere I go.

I know it's bad to do this but I usually take the headrest off the passenger seat and place a towel there and that is where he stands. I know that it's wrong to not have him in a crate. Please do not do as I do!

When we do go to the salon for peti / mani he is in one. I can't have them thinking I am a horrible daddy even if I am! :D

I modified my dogs large crate by cutting a tiny hole in the side of it and then screw in the perch when needed. My blind dog hardly uses it any more.

As far as harnesses well Harley will wear it but after a while he gets obsessed with getting it off him. I need to do better at distracting him. He has already chewed through two.
