Eclectus are awesome birds and can be really good talkers! I'm sure you'll be happy with one. Would you go for male or female?

I would like a male. The breeder's. Hen is sitting on 3 fertile eggs, which is rare for an eclectus as they generally only lay 2. I have second choice, and the person in front of me also wants a male... So we'll see. The first egg is due to hatch on nov. 28th ! I should know before christmas what their sexes are.

Here's an update on my situation :

1) I got the official written report from the air quality analyst today. My house is contaminated with Aspergillus (mold specie) and Penicillium (to a small extent). There are three levels recognized by health Canada, and I'm at the highest level (III). I didn't wait for the report, I had some of the work already done, ie central air exchange is installed (bringing air from outside, to dry the house, but not recirculation, as not to spread the mold inside the ducts), and air circulation problem has been fixed in the under roof.

2) Decontamination (the whole chebang, with guys wearing white outfits and masks) has to be done, and some parts of my walls downstairs have to be removed (which will leave nice whole all around my finished basement...). You have to leave the house when they do the decontamination part. So, I'm leaving for my parents for 5 days, and I have 2 contractors working on a quote for me; both think they can have everything finished or about for when I come back.

3) Change of plans on the breeder, I have given a deposit on a breeder near Ottawa for a baby Male Eclectus. I will drive to Ottawa to get him on the 30th, he will be 4 months old then. If I'm lucky, I will even have the choice between 2 brothers !

So, everything is turning out fine. Only thing left is how much the decontamination is going to cost me... I hope it's not too much.

Wish me luck, and if anyone wants any advice on mold or contamination, I'm starting to be pretty good at it ! :D

Update on central air exchange :

the air exchange has been running one way only, bringing air from the outside inside the house. I can't make it recirculate the air inside the house, or push from inside towards the outside, because the house is not decontaminated yet and this would contaminate the ducts.

So, after 72 hours of fresh air coming in the house :

1) the humidity has gone down from 60% to about 34%, which is the norm, and great !

2) Today is the first time in about six months that I don't have to take my medication. I have not breathed so well in more than a year. I am feeling great !

If I had known this before, there is no way I would have lived in this house without it.

I am working on getting a contractor work on the decontamination part while I'm at my moms for the holidays. If this can be done, it means my new baby (I call him " Jazz "), will be coming home on december 30th ! He is my Christmas present from me to me, I want him so bad !

Wish me luck !

Allergies : transforming my house (update)

Postby sidech » Mon Mar 07, 2011 8:37 pm

Well, for those interested or having similar problems, here is an update on my house.

The air quality inspection showed that my house was contaminated with Aspergillus (molding), that the CO2 concentrations in the house were too high (due to lack of ventilation) and that the humidity level was too high also (60% and up).

So, to solve all that, I had some parts of my dry wall removed, to make sure there was no problem hiding inside the walls (there had been water infiltration there before I bought the house), the whole house was sprayed with fongicide (I had an allergic reaction to that for almost 1 month, despite the fact that is claimed to be very safe), cleaned with a commercial grade HEPA vaccum cleaner and the air from the house was put outside using reverse pressure (please don't ask any details, I have no clue). There was also work done in the attic to help ventilate better and insulate.

Also, I had a NOVOCLIMATE air exchange installed, which took care of the humidity and the ventilation problem.

And, last but not least, I am having a central HEPA vaccum installed next week.

Guess what ? I seem to have very very little allergies left, but I HAVE NO MORE MONEY !!!!!!

Jazz is very happy about all this !

Thanks for the update and glad to hear that its working for you. It may have been expensive, but the quality of your life is greatly improved!

I'm also glad to hear that Jazz is doing well!
