Just found a new use for Senegals!

Postby Michael » Sun Oct 04, 2009 6:25 pm

I picked stuff out from under my finger nails with her beak. She laid in my hand and I was able to use her point beak to get something out and she didn't mind. I cleaned it all off and gave her beak scratches in return for it of course!

Actually I want to know why they like getting their beaks scratched so much? I know Kili definitely likes getting her beak scratched. She even enjoys it when i file it a bit. Sometimes when she has food bits stuck to her beak I scrape them off with a fingernail as well.

Anyone know about some of the weird things you see on their beaks? Not so much leftover food but kind of looks like a growth, barnacle, or whatever. Don't know how to explain it. Kili's beak looks good now so nothing to show but I noticed that when I bring her in to get trimmed, they scrape around her beak and pick off some bad looking stuff and the beak becomes very clean and shiny looking.

I've been told by my vet that it's normal; the beak grows continuously and it happens to flake off at times, giving a less smooth look.

Not sure if Shade likes having her beak "scratched" (I think so), but I know Joey LOVES it.

Petey is missing from that one actually.
Can't take a picture like that anymore..Petey won't cooperate with me for a picture anymore ;)

I did take a "family portrait" when I came back from camping the year I got Petey..But Zuri wasn't with me at the time. I'll go post it in the proper thread.

Aw Joey gets fuzzed up just like Kili. Seems to really like it! Do you have any videos of how they solicit scratching??

Here is Kili scratching herself:

She's like "You gonna do this or what? If you wanna get things done, do em yourself!" :senegal:

I like it when parrots do that.

I think of mine only Petey does it.

My mom's cockatoos do it a lot. You can spend hours petting them, they'll keep asking for more
