parrot rescue

Postby liz » Thu Feb 24, 2011 10:46 pm

I have a 20 year old Double Yellow Headed Amazon that I rescued 5 years ago. I would like to rescue another. I do not want to buy from a pet shop. Do you know of one who needs a home. I am in NC but willing to travel.

I'm getting no where fast. oodles.com wanted to sell me a car. When I go to rescues they want donations instead of forever homes. I have filled out adoption forms every where I could and emailed everyone else. This is not easy. I emailed the Carolina Rescue because I couldn't get into their adoption form. Unless you come across one that needs a home - I guess I will just wait and see if I get a response. I will adopt any female of Amazon size. I don't want babies just happy pets.

Yeah , most of the rescues do charge something, alot of those people need money for food, vet bills all that kind of stuff, just like everybody else.Your not going to get rich rehoming/rescueing parrots. If you can find a tame bird with no issues it most likely won't be free. You can find old ,burned out breeders for sale that are relatively cheap, most are called "proven breeder", and are either Xpets turned breeder or true breeder birds that have had no human contact, either way they are a real challenge to the most experienced Amazon people. Most will never be tamable , truth be known they're probably happier living out their lives with a few birds to talk to and no humans. Anyway go on oodle.com and enter parrot.

Hey Liz, I get the impression that your looking for someone to give you a tame bird.I don't think your going to find one at a rescue/rehomer or even on line ads,Most of those people realize a tame bird has value and want a new owner to commit to a bird (pay money)to avoid impulse buying where a bird quickly moves into a unwanted or abuse /neglected situation. The adage "you get what you pay for or it's hard to get something for nothing" apply here.Word of mouth is your best chance and you need to make lots of contacts, maybe join some bird clubs or volunteer at a rescue/rehomer near you, foster birds for the animal shelter, that sort of thing. If paying 500 or 1,000 dollars for a bird seems like a lot maybe you don't have the resources to home several amazons as one vet visit can cost that much and rehomed birds normally have plenty health issues and at least need a wellness check before bring home to your pet fid. Be careful, don't get into too big of a hurry, and good luck. PS i realize i'm answering some of your emails online, but feel like others out there might need to hear this as well.

What really scares me is the adds that say they will give a home to any unwanted bird. Even scarier is the thought that someone may believe it and give up their bird to a hoarder or breeder.
Every spring these cockatiels have at least 2 babies (it's like the flock knows they will have to take care of them so they don't all nest). I don't sell them. I search for homes and give up cages and toys to help them adapt.
I would like a bird from a shelter that needs a home. One that was rescued from a bad situation or one from a person who can no longer care for it. There is one in a shelter in Greensboro that lived in a parking lot for 3 week in the winter before they caught it. It went wild but critters come to me and trust me. I could take an injured bird or a plucker. I can't take one with seriouse cronic health problems because my mother and aunt are both invalids is why I am home all the time.
I know this is getting lengthy but I am trying to tell my heart. Rambo is going to the vet Monday for his annual checkup. I have 2 old dogs with health problems and two old cats which one has a cronic health problem and she has been on meds for the last 12 years. I have some money to pay for a parrot and my aunt covers my vet bills when I can't.
I figure the lower the price the less value that person has for it's pet and the more chance that someone will buy it because it is cheap just for the status of owning an exotic pet.
Yes, I want another parrot but I also want to give a home to one who needs me.
Sorry - I'm on my first coffee. I get a little emotional before the coffee kicks in. Liz

Yes ma'am, i'm with you on the coffee. Another source might be local vets, mine refers people with unwanted birds to me .AS there's no rescues near me i drive birds over 250 miles oneway to get to that lady i recommended. But same deal , she's got rent, electric, food, vet, and lots of time invested in her birds, she 's great and does a first class job with her birds and is the only person i give birds to.

Sorry about tacking on to your letters - I'm computer illiterate.
I can pay some for a new member of the family but I don't want to buy a hand fed baby. I really don't want a young one as Rambo is 20. I don't want him to die of old age and the other still be young enough to morn him for years.
There is a little girl only 5 years old in Kentucky. They call her Baby. The owner has medical problems and can't care for her anymore. She is tame (and spoiled) and relativley cheap (because of the expense of travel and the time I would have to stay their until she wants to be with me she is a little out of my price). I am affraid they will sell her to someone who just wants to breed her.
Your right. Rambo has a vet appointment and I will talk to his vet.
