My birds are allowed in an out of their cages all day, but I'm always in the room with them. Cheney Bird chewed apart the phone wire while I was on the phone. It actually only took his beak a bite or two before it was almost chewed through. He's working on the mouse and keyboard, but generally I shoo him away before he can do any damage. If he's on my desk, I occupy him with Cheerios and then it seems the world around him is nonexistant.

Pigpen and No Name generally only destroy things that they're supposed to destroy. Newspaper balls, the bottom of their play gym, rope toys. I have caught Pigpen trying to chew on the wall, but her beak is so small that she can't do any damage. I'm more worried about her than I am about the wall, though.

Scotty destroyed a shirt today. Well, he put a hole in it. His beak made contact while he was being handled!

Question....how is it all these birds were allowed or able to destroy things?

Do you let them have free reign of the house?

How long have you kept birds? Sooner or later they get to something to destroy when you keep them long enough. Considering I've had birds for over 20 years, my list of destruction's pretty short.

Last week Sam the tiel started eating the wainscot in my room. No, he's not given free roaming rights. I was sitting 5 ft away from the play pen he was on, reading, and I hear "scritch, scritch, scritch, chunk, chunk, chunk." I look up and he's practically hanging by one toe off the playpen so he can get his beak to the molding.

If you get to cockatoos, God help you. You can be sitting in the same room and they'll jump to something interesting and take a chunk out of it before you can even blink.

CAPT! JOSIE! WHERE ARE YOU? You guys have been keeping parrots for a long time. You MUST have some good stories for this thread.

My parents' cockatoo had a habit of chewing through padlocks and metal chains to get through to anything wooden he had quick access to. He chewed through the banister on the stairs a couple of times.

Given the way they treated that poor bird, he should have taken their fingers off.

I've had my parrot for three years, and was leaning on the experience of my sister-in-law for the first bit when I had him. He's never made any attempt to eat/destroy anything he shouldn't (other than picking at my shirt a bit). He is outside of his cage all day (except when nobody is home) and is fully flighted...but doesn't even attempt to leave his cage, regardless of the nice chewable wood dresser next to his cage, and the obvious container of bird treats on it, or the box of toys near by. The wall behind his cage is untouched (except by poo; which is now shielded from poo by a bedsheet).

My sister-in-law has two cockatiels and budgie (for 10+ years), and HER sister had a cockatoo, whose only interests were screaming, toys and toes (not sure how long they had him. A few years at least). None of us have had any issues with destructive birds. Hence my question. I was confused at how much destruction everyone was reporting when I've seen...none. From anyone.

Keep in mind this cockatoo also had free reign of the house. He could unlock his own cage, and would go wandering around the house looking for someone to play with when he was bored.

My baby boy just graduated....he was sitting on my lap here, while i was watching TV on the computer, and started gnawing on the zipper of my sweatshirt. I didn't notice what he was actually accomplishing until I felt little bits of plastic hit my feet. The bugger was snapping the teeth off the plastic zipper of my top in half!
Wild animals are called 'wild' for a reason. Keep them that way. Adopt your pets, or buy them from a certified breeder.

This thread is for true bird lovers.

Rambo chewed a hole behind the toilet big enough that he could have gotten out. I had to craw back their and nail a panel over it.

Myrtle rounds the corners of doors. I have had to put plastic caps on all my doors. She also chewed the buttons off the TV remote.
