What type of birds do you breed? Do you have a website of your birds that I can show my boyfriend?

My boyfriend is looking to get one (maybe two) birds and we're researching which ones would be best for him. He's looking at buying them from Our Feathered Friends in San Diego right now, but I have objections to that. I called and asked about the birds, and the guy didn't really know much about them.

I'm trying to get him to buy a bird from a breeder and not from a pet store. So if you have any suggestions, I'm sure he'd appreciate it.

Your BF's here in San Diego? What's he considering? Right now I have ringnecks on eggs, bourkes on eggs, tiels on eggs. I'm handfeeding some baby jenday and sun conures. I have deposits on most of them. One baby sun may be available. I include a cage, food and vet check w/ all my babies.

See my birds at my blog

I was in Feathered Friends a couple of weeks ago. They didn't have many babies at that time. The older birds weren't really all that friendly at the time.

He's actually in Bridgeport, near Yosemite, but his parents and siblings are all in the Imperial Valley. His parents are in Calipatria, one of his brothers is in Niland, one is in Imperial, and his sisters live around there as well. He spends a lot of time down there and wants to find a breeder in the area.

He's been looking for conures, though he really likes the way lorikeets look. I'm trying to steer him away from those because of the mess they make and the fact that he'd be a beginner bird owner and I don't think a nectar eater is the right path for him to take. Noise doesn't really matter because he's pretty noisy himself, so a sun conure or a jenday may be perfect for him. I'll have him take a look at your blog and see what he thinks.

When I called Twin City Pets, they told me to call Our Feathered Friends. The guy I spoke to said they have a sun conure that's being spoon fed right now and they have some adult birds, but none of them are bred on premises and he didn't know where they came from. Their website says they do all their breeding there, so go figure.

Feathered Friends has a breeding farm in north San Diego, but they also buy from local breeders. The staff sometimes doesn't know where a particular bird came from and has to wait for the owner to come in to find out.

Lorikeets - I love them. I used to have a pair OUTSIDE and I couldn't deal. I wrote on another thread that I figured I could deal since they'd be outside and w/ the formulated diets. I knew the poop was projectile and watery. I did not expect the ANTS that love the sugary food and sugary poops, the moldy poopy perches, the sugary watery poops dry into fig newton filling so you're cleaning fig newton filling off everything. I was hosing down the lori cage every day. I just couldn't deal and got rid of them within about 6 months.

Ringnecks I feel are really great beginner birds. They're very forgiving of poor, inexperienced handling provided they're super tame and socialized. They're really difficult if they're not already tame and social. They can talk pretty well, they're not "needy" but enjoy hanging with their peeps, they're not too neurotic, they come in neat colors.

I have a special love of the jendays since a jenday was my first "big" bird, but they can be hard to deal with in terms of neediness, noise, nippiness. So if not handled properly they do seem to develop bad habits easily - screaming and biting.

Let him know I'd be happy to meet up with him whenever he's en route to Imperial County and he can play with the Duck and maybe babies. Once my babies get about 4 weeks old I start taking them on errands with me so they can get super socialized.

I'll definitely let him know. I made him a username here so he can read up on some things if he'd like, so I'll make sure he checks this out.

I think he'd be good with any bird he gets. He really likes my GCC because of how cuddly he is. He's been telling me for days that he's jealous the bird gets more attention than he does. I think he's really just jealous that the bird is cuddly and he doesn't have one yet.

He said his brother has a co-worker that also breeds GCCs, so he's going to talk to his brother's co-worker and see how that turns out. I'm pretty sure he'll end up going with some kind of conure. Any of them would be good for him, especially since the bird and my boyfriend together would be in heaven. My boyfriend makes noise almost like a bird does --- in the morning and the evening. They'd be two peas in a pod.

And the messiness of the lorikeets is what I have an object to. I know he'd hate having to mop up the cage every single day, and these birds would be primarily inside. I don't think I could deal with making their food and cleaning up the bugs and mess that comes along with them, and I've been cleaning bird cages for years with no problem. They just seem like so much hassle, even if they are pretty neat to have.

Weather on sunday??? No way I am so sick of it. This last week has been great!
I dont want to take away from Roz, and would totally go to her first, but if you BF want to see and handle some babies, I have been watching this bunch of conures since the began to fledge: http://birdcrazy.com/tame_bird_availability/
Also, they have a lorikeet there named Sonny(? I think) We got our Goffins from OFF, but I have been less than pleased by their lack of knowledge--- at least by the staff in San Diego. Maybe they are better at the Escondido store. Our friend came home with a lovebird from the Escondido store Monday. Awesome very well socialized bird, about 1 year old.
For what it is worth, if your BF gets the time, at Bird Crazy he will have the opportunity to handle pretty much any bird he wants. The staff will leave you alone. Sometimes we spend hours there just goofing off.
Hey Capt! It is a pretty good drive from Phoenix to Sd. I would be happy to put you put for the night so you could break up your drive. Let me know if I can help.

I definitely wasn't too happy with the guy I spoke to at Our Feathered Friends. He didn't seem too happy to have to answer questions about the birds they had available. He also said there was no difference between a handraided/hand tamed bird and a petshop bird, so I really hope my boyfriend doesn't go with them. Right now, his brother's co-worker breeds GCCs, so he's going to talk to him. But I'll have him check out Bird Crazy and see if he can hang out with some birds first.

Kaylayuh - sorry I didn't tell you about Bird Crazy. You had indicated you guys wanted to get a bird from a breeder and not a store so I didn't think to tell you about that store. If we want to go store, there's Omars in Lake Forest (I think that's where it is. He can google omars exotic birds), Magnolia Bird Farm in Riverside County.
