Rambo in heat?

Postby liz » Mon Apr 11, 2011 12:01 pm

Is that what is wrong with him?

He has always been my loving baby and attached himself to my mother too. Now he only comes to me or calls me when he wants something. He has started calling Rachel (my daughter) and wants to be with her all the time. He won't even talk to Mom. He has left dents in my skin but never broke the skin.

It has already been a month. You say this could go on for another month?

Is Rambo nasty to me because of his season?

Is Myrtle smart enough to know that Rambo, 3 dogs and 2 cats are in my bedroom at night and she is left out? She would not go "nite nite" in her own box last night and insisted on staying with me.
She slept all night on my shoulder with her beak behind my left ear.

Could she possibly be that smart? She is picking up words and phrases at high speed and using them correctly.

I'm having very similar issues with Cheney Bird, and I've chalked it up to spring time and needing a girlfriend. Yesterday, he was laying in bed with me and tried using my hand as his girlfriend. I was completely shocked and a bit mortified, mostly because I've never had a bird behave that way.

I've started putting them to sleep at 7:30 when it's still light outside and waking them up at 8:30, well after their normal waking time. I've also turned off the heat in my apartment and am keeping it a bit chilly. It's helping with the constant screaming, but the biting and hand fascination is continuing.

Overall, there's really nothing you can do about it besides deal with it. It should be over in a month or two... or so I hope! And I mean I really, really hope.

Myrtle could have just been feeling cuddly last night or she could be going through her hormonal season too. Some birds get really cuddly, possessive and needy while others become vicious little Cujo's and bite at the mere mention of "step up."

Bucky is acting funny as well, but since I've only had him for a couple of weeks, and am new to birds in general, I don't know what his baseline behavior is anyway. The other night, he kept flying off the kitchen counter to the floor and running around poking his head in all the little crevices. We have one cabinet where the pot's handles' are too long to fit in the cabinet with the door closed, so it stands open a wee bit. He kept trying to finagle his way in there! He would do that, then turn around, tap his beak on the floor, lower his head and hold his wings out from his body just a bit, then charge full speed at my ankles. (The only thing he didn't do was scratch his foot like a charging bull.)

It was a crazy evening- I finally just put him back in his bedroom and covered him up. I didn't know what else to do. His antics to lure me to his "love nest" were going to get him stepped on!

I've been spending more time in focused training and exercising him, and trying to make sure he gets plenty of sleep. The rest of the time I'm praying this is over soon. :)

(Please forgive me for typos-I'm typing on my phone today... Grrrr!)

Rambo is 20 but Myrtle is only 2. I haven't had her very long and she has never voluntarily stepped up. Yesterday she called me with "Momma" (a new word) and fluttered her wings like a baby wanting food. When I went to her cage she stepped off the top onto my arm. No matter how many times I took her back she didn't want off. Before this if I got close to the cage she would fly to it.

It has me bumbed. I raised 2 "gifted" kids on my own and it wasn't easy. I hope she is not a "gifted" Amazon. I don't know if I can go through that again.

Rambo is acting weard again.

I was told that he was DNA tested a male but he sure doesn't act that way. He squats down and sticks his butt in the air and makes a pitiful moaning noise. (which Myrtle has copied)

Does anyone have an amazon who has gone through it's season? What did it do?

Myrtle can't figure out what is wrong with him. She puts her foot on his back and rocks him back and forth until he get angry at her.
