Will the babies be okay with a move that long? Make sure to take pictures of the babies. I love to see the little aliens!

The only disasters we've ever had to deal with are bush/grass fires. When we had our big Black Saturday fires in 2009 I had two Tiels living outside, who came inside in their travel cage for a few days to keep them out of the smoke, and had everything packed and ready to go (we were about 5kms from one of the bigger fires). Horses were naked and we'd organised to move them across the road in with other horses in a much bigger paddock.

Over summer we keep out the travel cages and practice putting Tim in it, being aviary bred, he's very anti-hands. Fortunately for us if you leave a small (budgie sized) cage out he'll happily put himself in it (we think he lived in a small cage for a little while), especially if you leave some greens in there for him :) In a pinch dad is capable of grabbing him when he's inside their cage, but he holds such a grudge about it and it's taken such a long time to get any kind of trust from him.

If no-one is going to be home on a high fire risk day, the birds go to work with Dad for the day, along with important things like photos, hard-drives, (in the car) etc etc

As of yet we don't really have a Bird First Aid Kit, but I think that might be in the cards. I certainly have a very extensive Horse First Aid Kit!

As of yet we have no Disaster Plans for our GCC's, having just come thru a very mild summer, it's not really something we've thought about, but something that certainly needs to be thought of. I'd like to think they could go to work with my OH for the day (they live with him), but he works in construction and that would not be a good environment for them. He would most likely drop them off to a friend's house (in their travel cage) for the day and pick them up on the way home from work.

Watch for skies that have a green hue to know if there's a tornado close. It's a great indicator of them in the U.S., not sure about in NZ. Also, look for rotation in the clouds. It's a pretty safe bet you should get the birds and yourself somewhere safe if that happens.
