Good luck with your dad! I really hope he comes around. Thankfully my own budgies seem to be growing on my parents. With any luck they'll look after them until I finish university and I can take them when I have my own place. They aren't anything like a greencheek though. :|

Ever consider living off campus? That's what I'm doing. I also live in Ontario, and will be going to Lakehead U, where it is cheaper to live off of campus, rather than on.

I'd rather be able to have my animals then go through the whole binge drinking, no privacy thing.

I've been thinking about it maybe for second year. I'm going to school in Nova Scotia though, and that's quite a long way from Ontario so it could make transport difficult. I don't really know the area very well yet and I'm not taking my vehicle either so at least a first year in residence is a must right now. *sigh* That, and I've already put a $700 deposit down on my residence so...

I feel your pain Giantmoa. My parents like Jack...but convincing my dad to actually LISTEN to my advice when I ask him to, or not to do something is like pulling teeth.

For instance; I've asked him, and told him thousands of times not to take Jack outside. Do Not Take Jack Outside. You think it would be an easy concept to get, eh?

I've come home from work during the summer to find him sitting on the front porch, a book in one hand, a fully flighted Jack on the other. No harness. Did I mention that it isn't an enclosed porch?

*facepalm*

And during the winter when I clean his cage, I'll hand Jack off to someone so I don't have to lock him in his carrier while cleaning. What do I find? Jack on his own, unsupervised, sitting on a table full of house plants; most of which are poisonous.

I agree with the plan that you need to get a professional to tell your dad what you've been trying to tell him. I've learned they they don't tend to trust what their kids say, because they're still 'kids'. They're far to accustomed to knowing more than their kids do.
Wild animals are called 'wild' for a reason. Keep them that way. Adopt your pets, or buy them from a certified breeder.

I truly, truly wish the best to you guys under 18 (or whatever the age of emancipation is where you live).

I was "lucky" that my parents didn't want anything to do with my pets, so long as I kept the kritters and their annoyances out of their way. My mom did threaten to boil my pets once. How psycho is that?

I just say that the parents have the unilateral power to get rid of the annoying pet as I've heard way more than once about some kid or teen coming back from a sleepover, a long weekend, summer camp, etc. and their beloved pet was gone because mom or dad couldn't stand the annoyance anymore.

Not saying any of your parents are psychos, but some of us adults have a lot less maturity than you guys have.

We had a cat before my step dad came into the picture. He hates cats, so when he moved in, my cat was confined to our storage room. For his own amusement, he abused her.

I was staying at my grandparents house for a week, and my mom called telling me they were going to have her put down. Thankfully, my grandparents took her in.

This left me psychologically scarred.

Protect your pets.

I would never be able to talk to him again. I'd be so furious that I'd probably be seeing red every time I looked at him after that.

My father did something similar once he kicked me out of his house when I was 13. He hated my cats and would terrorize them when I wasn't around to protect them. Even when I wasn't around, they would always be in my bedroom. Anyway, once he kicked me out of the house, he killed my cats before I could get them back. I haven't talked to him in 9 years because of that and other things.

Obviously everyone's parents aren't crazy. But people do some really stupid, heinous things. Always protect your pets.

I'm still furious about it. But I've promised myself that once I move out, I'm gone.

That's why my go-to advice is keep your pet away from your parent(s). Out of their sight, out of their minds (hopefully).

Some parents don't take to education well, even if it's from a "professional"; some may even find it offensive that you, as a child, would deign to "educate" them, the parent, by calling in a professional.

I had a friend whose dad shot her dog in front of her for her misbehaving when she was a kid. No wonder she's kinda a mental basket case as an adult.

And this is why I like animals more than people.
