Stupid Lame A** Spammers

Postby MissLady9902 » Wed Dec 16, 2009 1:24 am

Hey, is there a way that we can flag and/or remove the spammers post? It seems like we've been getting a lot recently.
Just wondering if there was a way to help you out.

I know. I do my best. The moment I see it, I remove all of it but there's only so many times a day I can remove it. I'd like to appoint some moderators that can help with that but I really need people who are on the forum like all day long for it to be of much help. The thing is I don't really want anyone "moderating" forum discussions unless they get really really out of hand. I just need help deleting the spam and spammers when needed.

As I think most of you know, I like to keep the forum very laid back and informal, facilitating respectful, hassle free discussions.

I don't mind being a moderator. If that's alright with you and everyone else.
I work midnights so I can be the late night watch!
I wouldn't feel comfortable doing anything else except removing spammers unless asked.
I do see a lot of them posting at wee hours. I get off work and I can remove the night spammers. Jerks.
Also, I can probably do it from my iPhone since I can read the forum and whatnot.
It's up to you though because this forum is your gig! :)
Also, this is my first forum and only forum I've been a member of. So it's not like I'm hopping around from forum to forum.
I'm always logging on and reading what everyone posts. Sometimes I feel like I'm OCD about it.
My hubbie has his nerd forum and I have my bird forum!
Think it over and see what you come up with!
Oh, Noodle says "beep beep beep (like the microwave but sped up a lot)" and Marvin whistles the wolf whistle at you guys!

I know... I know. This spammer problem isn't going away either. The fact is there is more of them than us and they have time on their side. I probably spend as much time every day clearing spam or deleting spam users as participating in the forum. I just don't always catch it in time. Seems like they are most active at night.

The biggest reason I am reluctant about recruiting help is because I've had terrible experiences with so called "moderators" on other forums. Every time you offer an opinion that disagrees with the generally standing opinion, a moderator would go crazy and give warnings, delete the post, delete the topic, etc. For instance, Kathleen posted a response to some folks, on another forum who were making excuses for using teflon pans around their birds, that they were being lazy and irresponsible. Guess what. First her response was deleted and if that wasn't bad enough the entire topic was removed. Why? Because one of the moderators used teflon around her birds and couldn't fess up and take responsibility for it. SO what did she do? Instead deleted everything. As much as you want to, you cannot just delete the truth.

But that's the thing we hate about other forums and why we decided to start our own. I hate how controlling other forums are. They try to regulate word for word what people can say, what kinds of pictures they can post, etc. They have as many moderators as regular members who have nothing better to do than hassle members and delete everything they disagree with. By deleting all posts that disagree with them, it makes them come off as right but that's only cause they were whimpy and deleted everyone else.

So as you see... I know that I can be very laid back about forum control. I just get worried about recruiting a moderator that goes rogue and start getting a little too delete-happy. Personally, I have never deleted a legitimate parrot-related post on this forum, ever. The worst it got was deleting someone posing to be a parrot person as some kind of sick joke and even that I let go on far longer than it should have just in case this had any legitimacy to it. You can't have a fair interesting discussion if you shut out all the opposition.

So I'll give this moderator recruitment deal a try. My biggest fear about it is someone deleting legitimate posts by accident or on purpose because restoring deleted stuff is really hard (not impossible but impossibly annoying). So I'll try to figure out some kind of way to make the recruiting process fair. I'll add a new topic about this.
