I have NEVER seen a bird like that black one in the 2nd to last vid on the first posting. What in the world is it? (And why haven't I seen one?)

Those are too cute though. I guess animals and babies are great for advertising! (Even better than Cavemen!)

Are you talking about the one with the pink cheeks and the crest? If so, it's a palm cockatoo.

haha! I love them! If they were more popular in U.S. aviculture, I'd have one for a pet. To me, they look like the big bad rockstars of the bird world.

I'm pretty sure that green naped lorikeets are a subspecies of rainbow lorikeet. (I may be wrong though)

they migrated to new guniea some years ago and evolved enough to be classed as a different bird. like the pukeko and the takahae and different birds but there distant relatives were pukekos, same applies to the green naped lori and the rainbow lori

the pukeko i believe is called the purple swamphen in australia but migrated to new zealand quite recently (in evolutionary years) about 25,00 years ago so there are only very small differences between the 2 but the takahae has been here much longer being completly flightless (like the kiwi) and also devloping stumpy string feet for running (like the kiwi) they didn;t have any land predators so they didn't have a need to fly and joins many other flightless birds, kiwi...kakapo to name a few
heres the picture difference

pukeko (much slender body for flying but they are known as lazy fliers)

takahae (much stockers and kiwi looking) and of course now endangerd, you see pukekos on road sides all the time
