Parrot age

Postby liz » Fri Jun 24, 2011 8:59 pm

I have been watching YouTube. They have some very old Amazons. One is 105 years old and looks like a geriatric man. Cinder is 75 years old and has a crippled left foot and can barely walk. Then there was a 45 year old that was showing a lot of age and forgot how to talk but did make noice.

I have been told they can live into their 80s. From what I saw the parrots in the wild can't live beyond 40.

What can you tell me. I am affraid for mine. I am 61 and don't expect to make it to 80. If I do Rambo will be 40. I don't want to think of him living the second half of his life in that condition and without me. Myrtle will be 20 and in her prime. It will be hard on her to reajust to another home at that age.

The the normal life span for an Amazon in the wild is 50-60, and in captivity they could live up to 80. Thats all I know about that, and you knew that already(:
Do you have any family members that could take them, if worst comes to worst? If you do maybe you could get that bird used to that person and have them bond, just in case?
In my opinion if a parrot is super old and having physical pain, of difficulties, I think it would be cruel to make them suffer. Im sorry Im not much help <3 *hugs*
She was not quite what you would call refined. She was not quite what you would call unrefined. She was the kind of person that keeps a parrot.

At this time, I have no one I would trust with my kids. My duaghter loves them but at 38 she is not as responsible with her pets as she should be. She loves them and plays with them but if she has something she wants to do she doesn't even check if they have food or water.

I have put my kids in my will to go to my son (just so my daughter won't get them). He has my heart. If he is low on money, he will by for his pets and do without for himself. The problem with him is he is bi-polar and can't take the noise.

Log into YouTube.com and bring up "Amazon 75 years old". It will take you to Cinder and then open up for the other old ones. It will break your heart but you have to see it.

I'm sorry, thats really difficult. Have you looked into foster homes? I wish I could help more.
And those videos are heartbreaking
Its sad that he has to live like that.

Since everyone in the forum already knows the personality of each bird, has anyone in the forum ever adopted when the owner died or could no longer care for them?

I know I would. If there was a bird with a shorter life expectancy than me, such as Cinder or even the 45 year old, I would adopt and care for them.

I would just go back in the forum with the birds name to refresh my memory of it's personality, likes and dislikes.

That is sweet of you, but you are so young that you don't know what your future will bring. I hope not but you may fall madley in love with a man allergic to birds.

You're right. I am young /:
And if that ever happened, the poor guy would have to sleep outside. <3

TilafromManila with the Amazon Parrot entry really upset me.

In further investigation - the really bad off old parrots are the ones who have been passed around, neglected and even mistreated.

A new Hospice Nurse was here this morning and told me of a 60 year old Amazon. It owned a British soldier and had for all its' life. They were in a tropical area and it was free to hang out in the yard. It would tell the man that the little girl next door got home from school, when company was coming and when it wanted in the house. It could fly, talk and sing. The nurse told me he was a beautiful bird which means he was well cared for.

That makes me feel better. I will outlive my cockatiels I hope. And Myrtle is a sweetie and gets along with everyone and everything. She is still a little bit afraid (she was terrorized by an African Gray) but will grow out of it. Rambo is another story. I worry about where he will go when I die.

But TilafromManila scares me.
