clipped wings

Postby moaely » Wed Jul 13, 2011 4:36 am

Hi i just got my parrots wings clipped becouse i just dont trust the flight harness

I started to put the flight harness on him, taking it slow but he absolutely hates it, i mean really hates it. And when i finaly got it on i could see the disconfort the bird was experiencing.

One reason for that is that I live in Slovenia and am quaite possitive that am the only one who owns a senegal. So the reason is that ebay and amazon dont deliver aviator harness to slovenia so i was forced to get another. And this one is not confortable and worse than that i got the feeling that the bird would be able to escape.

So i took the bird to the vet and got the wings clipped and forgot about the flight harness all together. The job was done professionaly so he can still fly a bit.

What i want to ask if there are some huge dissadvantages of clipped wings:
Or in other words could you tell the pross and conns from your personal experience.

thnx

This does not make any sense. Clipping wings and wearing a harness are two completely different things for different purposes. Clipping wings is for keeping a parrot relatively flightless indoors. A harness is to prevent a parrot from flying off too far outdoors whether clipped or not. Even clipped parrots can fly off outdoors and get lost. Here's just one example:

You made a mistake clipping your bird for the wrong reason. You still shouldn't take it outside until you can safely have it wear a harness. Here are some articles about training a parrot to wear a harness through positive reinforcement:

Yes i know but, becouse the harness isnt a good one and becouse it would take a month to deliver a new one i decidet to be very carefull and took an extra step to asure the bird would not fly away if he managed to get free of the harness. And the next step was wing clipp.
