It's awful the way those people say their stories proudly, like you should be wildly impressed they mistreated their parrot. I get this a lot because I volunteer at a zoo where I play with some of the macaws and cockatoos to keep them tame, and people feel that if they tell me past experiences they'll get to touch the birds, I guess. This is probably the worst story I've ever heard: "we found a macaw a few years back at a garage sale. One eye was puffy and closed so we tried to cut it open with some scissors but that just made it mad, so we left it in the cage. It didn't fit throught the door of the cage; when we wanted to take it out we had to unscew the bottom but it was a lot of work so we left it in there." This was two years ago, but I'll never forget it.

Well, not so much a socially awkward situation as it was an eye-opener towards how crazy some of my relatives really are. When my mom was a kid, her aunt (who is only a few years older than she is) had this parakeet but was always complaining about how noisy it was and nobody ever took it out or played with it and rarely fed it. My mom's grandma got sick and for a while her family stayed with them, and my mom felt so bad for the poor bird that she would feed it, scrub out its cage a couple times a week, talk to it, and give it baths with the little sprayer on the kitchen faucet. When her grandma got better and they were going back home, she just gave the parakeet to my mom because nobody else took care of it. It wasn't trained and liked to throw its seeds at my grandpa and scream, but my mom loved that bird.

I guess it lived with them for a while and then it started laying eggs and eventually "egged herself out" as my mom puts it. (They got up one morning and the bird was lying dead on the bottom of the cage with a bunch of eggs.)

@shelby and word painter7,
thats awfull... poor birds...
i'v heard stories like,
"why, i had an IRN once. it bites alot, so we wingclipped it. it still continued bitting so we duct taped its beaks. but then it'd flap its wings alot, so we cut off its wings from the root. but it kept escaping so we tied a rope to its leg. but then it starved one day and died. stupid bird. all the can do is poop and eat anyway."
after i heard that, i was shaking...(to permanently stich his lips without anesthesia...)
i could never talk normally to him ever again... :evil:

My mom's bird was really lucky that my mom took care of it and was able to take it from my aunt and give it a good home. But for every one that gets taken to a better home, there's probably 10+ that are suffering and nobody knows. It is such a shame that so many people get a bird on impulse and don't know how to care for it and end up abusing and killing the poor creatures. I wish pet stores and breeders educated the potential buyers and then they had to pass a test in order to buy the bird!

I wish the breeders would stop for at least 3 years. The shelters would be empty of dogs and cats because people would have to adopt what already exists.

Parrots would all of a sudden have value to the people who don't take care of them. They would sell them to someone who cares.

Ha ha ha! I am still looking for a nice pair of rose tinted glasses, together with blinkers.

And thank you for introducing Transatlantic to me. They sound so much like Pink Flyod.
Watching and listening them was a good pair of rose tinted glasses. Pity the video was good only for 8 minutes.
