help please

Postby jackieboy » Sat Jan 21, 2012 10:50 pm

Hey guys my name is jack and i have one cockatiel. I am considering getting a small parrot I don't want to spend over 250-300. I don't know what type specifically but i would prefer something that would be social and not unkind ti my cockatiel.
Thanks

hi, you could check parrot rescues and bring your cockatiel to choose it's own companion. the rescue i adopted from asks for a 200 dollar adoption fee.

Where are you situated? The price of birds varies a lot from country to country. If you are in Australia I would say get a princess parrot, because I am in LOVE with them and they don't cost much. They are quiet and gentle, they talk, and get along with most species.
A lot of small parrot species CAN be bossy and jealous, including green cheeks, lovebirds, parrotlets, senegals, indian ringnecks.

Of course, your cockatiel would definitely prefer anther cockatiel.

I speak from painful experience...I'd really urge you, if you go through with another bird at all, to *please* *please* consider another tiel or perhaps a linnie or budgie. Tiels are the fragile pacifists of the bird world and are the first to be bullied, bitten and stressed in a mixed-species situation.

Even the other similarly szed birds like conures and quakers are much more sturdy and aggressive and I know first hand the pain and sadness of living with a bird desperately trying to kill my tiel and harassing the poor little guy so much he was screaming, neurotic and nervous. Not only that but the constant stress made him ill often as well.

Ultimately I rehomed him, and having to walk out of the rescue hearing him screaming and calling for me was one of the hardest things I had to do. He's happy now, living with a retired couple who spoils him, but still to think he spent 5 years like he did with me and ultimately had to leave me and all he'd ever known makes me really sad. He was a wonderful companion and I miss him everyday and often think of what 'could' have been if not for my grey and the cirumstances.
Please consider this, your present bird's situation and feelings, before you make the choice for yourself to add another bird, for ultimately, yourself. I don't mean that offensively, but if you've had the one bird for a long time, its pretty certain he doesn't want to share. And if you have to split out-time the relationship isnt quite as special as having your one bird who's always with you.

At least, that's been my experience. Just as food for thought, why would you want another bird? If it's because your relationship with your tiel isnt quite what you want...then work on it. For something that looks different...again, really think if thats the right reason.
