Pheasants

Postby Saerphe » Mon Apr 09, 2012 9:17 pm

I was on the phone with my mom today, and she was telling me about the two pheasants (a male and a female) who've taken up residence in our yard. Pheasants aren't native to our area, but I know there's a guy nearby who raises them, so they probably escaped from there.

Anyway... apparently when the coffeemaker goes off in the morning, the male comes right up to the sliding glass door and beats his wings and yells until Dad gets up and throws some food out for them.

I gotta say, I find it utterly hilarious that my parents have unwittingly conditioned these pheasants to expect food when the coffeemaker goes off. It's like a cat that comes running at the sound of the can opener.

I love it.

My mother had a Humming Bird coming to her wind chimes. I gave her a feeder to put in it's place. The feeder got crouded so I gave her another. She eventually had 5 feeders in her front yard. When a feeder got empty the Hummers from that feeder would come and look in her living room window until she refilled it. If she sat on the front porch the would hover around her. When I went on the porch she told me to cover my eyes. Those little darts would jet in and stop at one foot away, hover and look at me like I was a stranger and did not belong there.

No birds as beautifully made as hummingbirds.
