But you still keep parrots, that's my point.

when i was talking about the animals in my home i was talking about my cat and hamster ;) . i don't have any birds right now, but yes, i will have a bird as a friend in the future, and when i do, i will rescue it from a shelter.

and by no means am i trying to say that having a parrot as a companion is a bad thing, just having one as a slave is bad.

You do have a point about rescues being part of the problem- but if there wasn't breeders putting more out there the circle would stop eventually.

yes you are right. but i do also agree with friends2parrots, some breeding is necessary if we want parrots to be around in the future. i vote for raise and release!
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands.

couldn't have said it better than this.

But what's wrong with a world with lots of parrots in it? why point the finger at breeding? the main reason there are so many parrots in rescues is because they were bought by people who didnt have half a clue as to how to train them, and live with them! the problem is a lack of awareness and education on the part of parrot owners, that sends the birds to the rescues!

Nothing is wrong with a world full of parrots. I just dont believe we should use these creatures for our own benefits. Like i said, my beliefs are that the cycle needs to stop. They belong in the wild not in our homes.

As said before whats done is done. What we can do is stop taking their habitats and let them get on with it. Some species will go extinct of course, but if we stop meddling then many others will be saved.

unfortunately the rate at which habitats are being lost is too severe to even hope for this. the wild habitats WILL disappear, and wild parrots WILL no longer exist in about a century from now.
that's what the trends are pointing to.

the parrots may not have a choice in the matter. the trends are pointing to the fact that for many species, living with humans is the only option, at the level of species-survival.

Exactly- the rate in which they are disappearing. They don't have to carry on this trend but they will because the human population is far far far too big and we take more than we need. Hell if they do keep shrinking this way then even we wont be here cuz we will all be suffocated so it wont matter about our loving little captive breeding programs anyway.
