Molting?

Postby GreenWing » Fri Feb 22, 2013 12:50 am

My Senegal's feathers appear different on her breast, we just noticed this recently. She has yet to have her first molt. She is almost 14 months of age.

I took her to the vet a month ago for a check up and the veterinarian said if she hasn't had her molt by Spring to revisit. She was in great health when I took her...

I'm wondering if this feather loss is a sign of a molt? The feathers on her breast look frayed/bushy... with the underfeathers showing. She preens at it but also preens other areas, too.

Any advice, comments would be really appreciated :senegal:

Haha GreenWing, I love your avatar. I saw that picture a long time ago and had forgotten about it but seeing it here gave me a good laugh.

I have a Poi (but not a Senegal) and when he molts I find lots and lots of feathers on the ground but he doesn't have any frayed or bushy feathers and none of his down feathers are showing.

I don't suppose you could post a picture? It's hard to say from the description but frayed feathers with down feathers showing sounds more like over-preening than molting.

I tend to agree but Nika hasn't molted since I've had her. She lost her cut wing feathers and grew new ones out but that was about it. I wonder how her body knew to molt only those feathers... When are Senegals supposed to molt?
