I feel your grief... we lost our red rump parakeet within a month and I was devestated because he wasn't sick. We had an autopsy and they said it was just one of those things like a sudden heart attack.

Just one word of advice to you in this difficult time. Keep a very vigilent eye on your other bird for up to 30 days. If it is anything bacterial or viral it should present within 14 days- in some cases it can take longer. I would also recommend that you thoroughly clean and sterilize the cage.

I hope they can find out what it was.

I'm keeping a very close eye on Wheatley, I can't help but feel worried when I come home I'll find Wheatley dead too. I have given the cage a thorough clean with disinfectant.
Wheatley seems to be ok though, he's chirping and bobbing his head around to music and singing to his toys. He seems to not be affected.
I called the vet today around 10am and they had to make some calls themselves as they weren't sure what the protocol for it was. I had to wait 5 hours for them to call me back. I was told I could bring her in and one of the vets could cut her up to find out what might have killed her, or I could have her sent off to be properly tested. I chose the latter as I'd rather be safe than sorry. It'll cost me over £100 for the procedure, but I know it'll be worth it to find out what happened.
I have to wait till tomorrow to get a phone call about how I can send her off and everything.
I feel a bit better than I did yesterday, but maybe it's because I'm trying not to think of her in the fridge. And I would cuddle with Wheatley but he's only hand tame. I'll just have to take comfort from his singing.

I feel like this still since Percy. It will get better, the chances are if your bird shows no symptoms within two weeks you're in the clear. Hopefully all will be ok. Might be worth a check up for Wheatley in a week to ten days?- just to keep an eye on things and put your mind at rest. You've done everything right so far- you cleaned and you disinfected. The important thing is not to blame yourself :-)

I took Amaterasu's body to the vet this morning, and she asked me some questions. Like if there were any plug in air freshners nea rher, or if I put anything in her food.
They phoned up the people who will be testing her and came back to tell me that if they send her today, they won't be able to test her till Monday as they're closed on the weekends. My only option is for me to drive her down myself. So I did. I had to drive 2 hours to get to the place, but luckily I found it easily enough. I brought her in and they said they'd start testing her right away. They asked me if I wanted to say goodbye to her first, but I said I'd allready said my goodbyes. Though I haveen't really, but I'd want to hold her one more time.
I felt bad for not saying goodbye to her, but I think I'll say goodbye in my own way, by taking all the videos I've taken of her silly antics and put them online. It's a shame though, I've only had her for four months and she was doing well with target training. She picked up on it much faster then Wheatley had.
I'll wait to hear from them before I lay any blame anywhere, just see if she died from natural causes or if something in my room caused it.
And here's a family photo of sorts, me Amaterasu and Wheatley. A few days before she died.

you all look so sweet together. is Amaterasu the little yellow one? they are both beautiful birds, i am sorry you two were separated.

keep us updated when you get the results back. all the best. :swaying:
If it looks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, we have at least to consider the possibility that we have a small aquatic bird of the family anatidae on our hands.

Yeah Ammy is the little yellow one. I could never figure out her colour mutation, I kept meaning to ask on here but never got around to it. She was a little ray of sunshine, very active. I'd catch her hanging upside down from the roof of the cage, sometimes from one foot xD
I'll hopefully hear from them tomorrow if I'm lucky, if not Monday. Wheatley seems to be doing well though, he does look a bit scruffy though. He has bits of down feathers sticking out of him, and his tail feathers are taking a while to grow properly. They're all scruffy at the moment.

I am so very sorry for your loss. There aren't any words, I know. My family just lost a dog last weekend... it's so hard. My thoughts are with you. *hugs*

Amaterasu was a very beautiful bird! I'm so sorry you lost her. I hope that something turns up in the necropsy... It won't make the loss any less painful but maybe it will help give a little closure and make it easier to know that Wheatley will be okay.

I got the result of the necropsy today, and it's good news for Wheatley. They found no trace of any sort of disease or illness. They said it was probably a sudden death from agitation, carbon monoxide or head trauma. I think it may have been a head trauma, she loved swinging from her toys while nibbling them and would sometimes fall off. She also liked hanging upside down from the roof of the cage, sometimes by one foot.
She was very hyper, hovering in her cage and flapping everywhere. It's possible she may have hurt herself. At least I know Wheatley is safe, no illness. And he's much calmer than Amaterasu was, she was kinda like me. Getting easily distracted. I can start to move on now, I may even share a video or two of her sillier moments. As a final good bye, and so I don't forget why I loved her so much, even though I only had her for a short time.

It was exactly the same with our Percy only they said sudden cardiac episode or any of the following options.

Don't let it put you off getting another bird though. We certainly felt better knowing it wasn't anything dangerous for our Eddie.

It's one of those very unfortunate things and I am so sorry.
