African Grey won't open his one eye all the way

Postby ksee425 » Tue Mar 19, 2013 9:20 am

Hi everyone,

This morning I woke up and went to check on my Grey, Aerial, and his one eye seemed a little off. I almost think he has a feather in there or some sort of bird dander or fuzzy. This happened once before but I let time take care of it and by the end of the day it had come out and his eye was back to normal. I will attach pictures to the post in a few minutes, one of his good eye and one of the one on question. Does this happen to anyone else's parrot? Does it call for a vet trip? I am not so sure. Any advice would be great. Thanks :)

It hasn't happened with any of my birds. If he's still doing it tomorrow you should take him to the vet because it's possible he injured it. Best wishes and keep us updated. :-)

I went ahead and scheduled a vet appointment for 10am. I will have an update soon. I hope he didn't scratch it or something.

My immediate thought is that he might have something stuck in his eye.

All went well. Aerial was fantastic at the vet and she said he was fine. He just got some fuzzies in there and agitated it. Nothing to worry about ^_^

With two Greys in as small of a cage as it appears to be I would recommend a trip to the vet to make certain that they did not get into a fight and injured the eye and then I would either get another cage temporarily to put one of them in and place it next to this cage or I would go and get a much larger cage for them. You have two CAGs that I can see in this cage and this bird is about 13 inches tall, with a wingspan of about 26 inches which means that for one of these birds you need a cage of at least 36 inches wide, 24 inches deep and as tall as you are if it is on wheels, other wise it also needs to be at least 36 inches tall and then setup so that the bird perches at close to your eye level. For two you need to get an even larger gage or get two of this size and remove one panel from each of them and join them together. If they are too crowded they will fight part of the time. The cage they are in looks like it is at best only about 20 inches square.

Yes, you need to take the bird to a vet... it might not even be a wound, it could be a tumor behind it or a number of other things. And yes, you need a good cage, the one you have there is only good for one bird to sleep in, not to live, and much less for two of them! You also need tree branches instead of the dowels you have in there and a better diet (it looks as if they have only sunflower sees in their bowl and, if this is right, it will slowly kill your birds, my dear -not enough nutrition and way too much fat and protein).

We will be happy to help as much as we can as we really do care for these birds and care as much about yours as if they were our own.
