New baby tiel sleeps at the bottom of the cage.

Postby Eric&Rebecca » Thu Apr 04, 2013 3:25 pm

The breeder called tonight just to run through everything we need for the weekend. She mentioned that George still sleeps at the bottom of the cage. He's active and flies and chirps al through the day and eats lots but still hasn't got the hang of sleeping on his perch at night.

Is this normal for younger tiels? Edmund didn't do it but I do trust this breeder and I have had regular photos, visits and videos of the bird.

12 weeks and about 2 weeks, he was eating seeds when I went two weeks ago.

And fruits, veggies, harrison's mash and eggfood

Oh and he's done it since birth :-)

And examined by an avian vet twice

And the breeder just messaged me... apparently he's gone on the perch on one foot LOL

Should be fine, some babies take longer to want to sleep on perches, Tico was sleeping on perch from about 6/7 weeks old so it suprises me that a 'tiel double that age is.

You could ask for an extended guarentee, most good breeders will offer 2 days-1week. I would try to get her to extend it to 2 weeks -1 month or ask for completion of sale subject to your own independant vet check though. I would hate for anything bad to happen to you after your last experience.

Apparently he's just started doing it tonight! She sent a picture to me bless him. She has a few younger ones that were in the cage next to his that he can see and they were still doing it so she thinks he was copying him. Now they've moved he's started sleeping on the perch!

Also he's been eating seeds since he was 6 weeks, he's flying and everything. Just took him a while to get the hang of it :-)

Apparently he's sound asleep on his perch now :-)

Whew, glad to hear it. Sounds like he may have been copying them then.

Yeah, she sent a picture. He was very active during the day so I wasn't too worried. He just seemed to like to sleep there at night but now they've moved he joins his brothers and sisters. He also had this tendency of wanting to stay up and try and play with the breeder when the others were asleep so maybe he liked it there because he would still call to her.

Nevertheless he's on a perch now. Bless him :-)

UPDATE:

So George spent the whole of last night on the perch and has started napping there too now. The breeder said since they moved the littler tiels out he has barely gone to the bottom at all so all is fine.

Apparently he's very friendly and has already started stepping up on her even though she hasn't taught him.
